Welcome to the start of the rest of your life-the one where you aren't wandering in the (financial) dark without a flashlight. The one where you have a clear roadmap to your future, and mathematical confidence that you and your family can have the life you dream of!

Plan Your Money Path contains thousands of dollars worth of professional financial planning advice, hints, tips, and hacks. Imagine how well you’d sleep at night knowing your boxes are checked—everything the kids will need, all your dreams right on through early retirement, when you’re young enough to enjoy those dreams.

Plan Your Money Path shows you how to take control and build your own financial plan, using high fidelity, inexpensive software (Pralana Online), not the simplistic financial/retirement planning tools you find all over the internet.

It will take you through some important general financial planning context, and then through the steps to building a financial plan for a sample family. Along the way, we'll discuss the different inputs and assumptions required for any financial plan, as well as how to interpret the results, put your plan into action, and update it as your dreams and circumstances change.

A Practical Guide That Helped Me Finally Make Sense of Retirement Planning

I was tired of generic personal finance books that repeated the same basic advice without showing how to actually build a retirement plan. I wanted something practical and easy to follow. Plan Your Money Path (2nd Edition) by Bill Hines was exactly that for me, and it ended up being one of the most useful retirement-planning resources I’ve come across.

Clear, Practical, and Easy to Follow

Financial planning can get overwhelming fast, but I liked Bill’s straightforward, friendly style. The book had some humor and personality, which made it feel approachable instead of dry or overly technical.

Instead of staying at the level of abstract theory, the book walked through a realistic family example step by step. That made it much easier for me to understand the order of operations—income, expenses, pensions, and investments—and it also helped clarify terms like MAGI and RMDs in a way that finally clicked for me.

Especially Helpful if You Use Pralana Online

The biggest value for me was how well the book worked alongside Pralana Online. Pralana is a powerful planning tool, but it has a learning curve, and I found the official manual harder to absorb.

This book helped bridge that gap. I read it with the Pralana web tool open next to me, and it made the software much easier to understand. It walked me through the setup process, helped me enter my data correctly, and even helped me catch a pension input mistake I probably would have missed otherwise. It was especially helpful when I was moving from the older Pralana Excel spreadsheets to the online version.

I Also Appreciated the Privacy-Focused Approach
Another thing I appreciated was that I could build out a detailed plan without linking any live financial accounts. That mattered to me. I was able to use aliases and still work with my real numbers from savings, brokerage accounts, 401(k)s, and Roth IRAs.

Because of that, the plan felt truly personal and grounded in my actual situation. I also liked that the book spent real time on long-term spending, not just investing, which gave me a much better sense of when my retirement goals were actually realistic.

Helpful Perspective on Common Retirement Sales Pitches

I also thought the book gave useful perspective on some of the sales tactics and fee structures that show up a lot in retirement planning.

• The AUM model: The section on assets-under-management fees lined up with concerns I already had about paying an ongoing percentage every year instead of paying for specific advice. It helped me think more clearly about the long-term cost of that arrangement.

• The "free dinner" seminar pitch: The book also helped me look more critically at seminar marketing and at products like annuities and reverse mortgages. Whether or not those products fit someone’s situation, I thought the discussion did a good job of explaining the tradeoffs and the risks.

Final Take

For the cost, I thought this book delivered a lot of value. It helped replace a lot of my uncertainty with a clearer, more structured way of thinking about retirement. I read it once straight through, then used it as I built my plan, and I expect I’ll keep coming back to it as a reference. For anyone who wants a more hands-on approach to retirement planning, I think it’s well worth reading.

Plan Your Money Path: Create Your Own Financial Plan by Bill Hines is a structured, hands-on guide to building a personal financial plan with clarity and confidence. It is positioned as a practical roadmap for individuals and families who want to take control of their long term financial decisions rather than rely on generic advice.

The book walks readers through the process of constructing a financial plan step by step, including assumptions, inputs, goal setting, and interpretation of outcomes. It also introduces the use of more advanced planning software to help users model realistic financial scenarios and update plans over time.

A key strength is its applied, example driven approach, which moves beyond theory into practical implementation. The focus on building and maintaining a dynamic financial plan makes it especially useful for readers who want a more structured and professional level approach to personal finance.

This book is best suited for financially motivated individuals, planners, and families who want to create a detailed, long-term financial strategy with greater precision and control.

I purchased this book to learn more about the Pralana Online Calculator, but was pleasantly surprised with the amount of financial literacy and fluency information provided by the author, Bill Hines. He writes with a unique blend of financial information and humor that makes this book easy and fun to read. I read the entire book with a smile and an occasional outburst of laughter.
