The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.
His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.
Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.
I’m so glad I got to re-read this funny, delightful and whimsical childhood favourite again! It was exactly what I needed as a pick me up book to survive the illness during holiday month ☺️
Although I had remembered a gist of the story, I was pleasantly surprised that my brain had forgotten most of the characters and the dialogues between them, which almost made this re-read experience like reading it for the first time! There were some hilarious dialogues between Alice and the creatures she meets in Wonderland and a very important moral about a child’s curiosity and imagination! The Duchess might agree with me on that moral ;)
Lewis Carroll made the book funnier with his take on wordplay, completely using the confusing nature of English words and pronunciations! The illustrations in this book were strange and a little scary too.. I wonder if all the editions had similar illustrations or if the Chris Ridell version would have more interesting ones?
I’ll read Through the Looking Glass next year if I get my hands on a copy .. happy holidays everyone!! As Mad Hatter says, it could always be time for tea!
