The Enuma Elish, the Babylonian creation epic, begins with the creation of the universe by the god Apsu and the goddess Tiamat. Apsu is the god of fresh water, and Tiamat is the goddess of salt water. Their union created the first generation of gods and goddesses, including Anu, the sky god; Enlil, the air god; and Ea, the water god. The younger gods were noisy and disruptive, and Apsu decided to destroy them. Tiamat refused to allow this, and a great battle ensued between Apsu and Tiamat. Apsu was defeated and killed, and Tiamat was left to rule the universe alone. Tiamat created a new race of monsters to help her rule, but the younger gods were afraid of them. They turned to Ea for help, and Ea devised a plan to defeat Tiamat. He tricked her into drinking a potion that made her drowsy, and then he killed her.
