From the front — These things couldn't possibly happy-but they did-to — Burl Ives — Noel Coward — Beatrice Lillie — Ida Lupino — Guthrie McClintic — Mae West — I Believe in Ghosts — As told to and recounted by Danton Walker — Edited and with an introduction by Martin Ebon — From the copyright — This book is a re-edited version of Spooks Deluxe, which was published in 1956. From the back Ghosts and Hauntings Dennis Bardens This is a searching book. It asks DO ghosts really exist? If so, just what ARE they? And it presents a number of conjectures and much eye-witness evidence. Ghosts... "Do they exist wholly in the mind of the percipient or have they separate existence?" asks Mr. Bardens. "Why do some people see ghosts and others never at all? How is it that 'psychic' or paranormal phenomena occur at different times, in the same place, to quite different people having no contact with the other? How is it that ghosts appear almost invariably to be clothed (only one nude ghost figures in this book)? And why period dress? Common sense dictates that clothes wear out even in--assuming there (to be) such a place--the 'spirit world'." In his exploration of the question--or world--of ghosts, the author dips into many poltergeists, harbingers of death, haunted houses, haunted furniture, ghostly animals, ghostly lights and sounds, random unexplainable phenomena. In this book, which LIBRARY JOURNAL called "a fascinating narrative," you will find true stories of extra-physical experiences in the lives of a wide range of witnesses, including the author himself, whose inquiry into the nature of these strange phenomena, though it may not yield definitive answers, it is timely and serious excisions that is both stimulating and entertaining.
I think this book is pretty great for the time it was written in (1957)! Ghost stories are timeless and we don’t need to know the specific peoples names or things to grasp the stories! A nice little collection of short stories and worth the read.
Printed in 1956, this is the original "celebrity ghost stories"! this is a fun book of ghost stories collected from actors, directors etc. from the early 1900's through 1940's. The ghost stories are a lot of fun but I think the more charming aspect of this book are the anecdotal bits of life in this era. There are also quite a few stories regarding seances featuring 'table tipping', something I had never heard of--it is a bunch of ridiculousness but it is fun to read about. The 'psychics' of this time frame where real performance artists. Fun read!
This is a great collection of spooky tales. The author does a great job of making you feel as if a friend is telling you all these ghost stories. Loved every minute of it!
