A brilliant memoir of Captain Gilliand of the Loyal Lancashire Regiment.
Wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans in 1914, denied treatment and kept in inhumane conditions as a PoW making many attempts to escape over the years.
Finally making it over the frontier to Holland and being repatriated to the UK to form 1 of the most exclusive clubs in the world, The Escaped Officers Club.

A very good account of the author's wounding (the Germans refused to treat him properly), imprisonment, and escape on foot across the German countryside to freedom in Holland. It's one of the most harrowing escape stories that I've ever read. The author and his companion jumped from a train and spent several days starving, half-frozen, down in the mud, slime, and dirt, hiding from German citizens and sentries. A dramatic read and definitely recommended.
