When life doesn't work out the way we expect it to, we often grow angry and bitter. Gary Smalley was living a life like that―angry about what was not going his way―until God gave him a wake-up call as he recovered from a kidney transplant surgery that saved his life. Gary had a life-changing encounter with God. In this very personal book, Gary exposes his personal conflict with God, his own problems, and how God used this situation to teach him about his relationship with God. As he did in his best-selling book The DNA of Relationships, Gary Smalley will provide you with insight and answers to your relationship with God, but this time he opens up his own personal struggles and gives us the six daily habits that he learned to stay connected with God.
Gary Smalley was one of the country's best-known authors and speakers on family relationships. He was the award-winning, best-selling author or coauthor of sixteen books, as well as several popular films and videos. The Blessing and The Two Sides of Love have won Gold Medallions, The Language of Love won the Angel Award as the best contribution to family life, and his other titles have received Silver Medallions. His national infomercial Hidden Keys to Loving Relationships has been viewed by television audiences all over the world.
Dr. Greg Smalley graduated with his doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University in Southern California. He also holds master's degrees in counseling psychology (Denver Seminary) and clinical psychology (Rosemead). Dr. Smalley is the director of research and development at Smalley Relationship Center in Branson, Missouri. He lives in Ozark, Missouri with his wife, Erin, and their two daughters, Taylor and Madalyn.
Prayer requires focus and commitment. Focus requires centering in on God. If we're not careful, the busyness of our lives can become a never-ending excuse not to pray. ~ Gary Smalley, "Your Relationship With God", p. 131
I am glad that Gary Smalley wrote this book on developing your relationship with God. I was thinking about why this book wasn't written earlier, as he had written many books on your relationship with your wife, husband, children, etc. However, this book is the major piece of the relationship puzzle and perhaps the most important peace because I believe if you have a good relationship with God, that relationship will flow down to your other relationships. If we seek first our relationship with God, all our other relationships will be added to us.
Gary takes us through some struggles in his own life and things that God had taught him during his trails.
One practical thing he mentioned in his book was concerning humility and how when you go out to eat with people, that you allow them to eat before you eat. This is a practical way to show true humility to others.
I hope more books will be written about developing your relationship with God. I think if one wants to develop a more closer walk with God, they should study books on prayer and practice prayer more consistently, as Gary Smalley also says in his book, "I don't know anyone who can maintain a good relationship without continual communication and contact" (See page 125).
I really appreciated how honest Smalley was about his own failings, and about how he drifted away from God. His journey back is worth reading about - and of course, it comes down to making time for God and for Bible study. I'll hang on to this as I think I'll need to read it again over the years.
