Writer/Editor Kate Petty (born Katharine Chapman) was the innovative author of more than two hundred books for children, including fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Her award-winning pop-up books with illustrator Jennie Maizels and her collaborations with the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, are among her most popular works.
This book explores different facts about space. Each page is dedicated to teaching children something very interesting about space! My favorite spread in the book discussed satellites and how they were powered by the sun. The illustrations are very intriguing and they mix realism with cartoon drawings. Each page also includes either a true/false question or a project for the students to try! On my favorite page, there is a project where a student attaches a ball to a piece of string and spins it around to help demonstrate the pull of gravity.
This would be the perfect book to help introduce students to the topic of space. The book is filled with facts that will make them grow curious to know more! I would love to read a page a day as we navigate throughout the space unit and we could use the project on that page to make it engaging for students!
This is a really cute book that gives information about astronauts and space in a way that would be understandable by children in younger grades. There are many facts inside, such as how fast a rocket goes when leaving earth, and how much you weigh on the moon versus how much you weigh on earth. A good way to use this book in your class would be to suggest it to a kid who was really interested in space facts. You could also use this in your classroom for a space unit, picking facts out of it and letting students read more into it to learn what some of the vocabulary means and what the object the word is describing actually looks like.
