Egor, a recent college grad, is stuck in a rut with his in-game character, Gor, in the VR world of “Rakuen.” Dubbed the “Dancing Barbarian” by fellow players, Gor has been grinding away in the newbie sandbox for far too long. It’s time for him to break out into the wider world! Only there can Egor and his crew—both old friends and new allies—truly make some serious cash. And who knows, they might even hit the mother lode.
Now that Gor’s mythical pickaxe, which houses the soul of an ancient god, is bound to him by an unbreakable hex, no one can take it from him!
Dan Sugralinov grew up in a small working-class town on the Russian border with Kazakhstan. It’s a miracle he survived his childhood games of hide-and-seek in the surrounding building sites complete with perilous rebar structures and flooded foundation pits.
Ever since he learned to read at the age of five, he couldn’t put a book down. Reluctant to earn himself the name of a conceited nerd, he concentrated on playing soccer which allowed him to become friends with the town’s toughest kids.
In 1995, he graduated with honors, entering the St Petersburg Academy of Engineering and Economics where he studied business creation. He must have done something right because in the years that followed, he first worked on TV and radio just to get the taste of it, then opened his first successful business followed by several more. In between, he started writing and playing video games, winning the St Petersburg Mortal Kombat championship and becoming runner-up for Starcraft and Warcraft 3. He is a 14-times champion in Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 as well as the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft.
In 2004, he wrote his first motivational novella The Bricks which to date has garnered him over 3,000,000 readers online alone.
In 2014, Russia’s leading publishers of business literature Mann, Ivanov & Ferber published a revised and extended edition of his book, The Bricks 2.0.
In 2015, Dan discovered the existence of LitRPG. He devoured everything that had been written in that genre until he finally decided he too could write similar books.
In summer 2017, he published his first book in the subgenre of realRPG: Level Up.
Dan Sugralinov is a consummate gamer, a multiple MMORPG champion and the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft. He is also a successful businessman and author of books on marketing and business organization. His first LitRPG series Level Up took Russia by storm in 2017. Its English translation is about to be released on Amazon.
I would love to give this story a higher grade as it is very good plotline, character development etc, but I can't get over the inconsistency of the item in question. For ex. The MC has a full set of epic gear each piece has plus around 200 per stat. Full set would be 1k, the epic swords he finds are about 300 to 400 damage. Now it says in o e place he has about 16k health without the pickaxe. He takes out the ac which adds 2.6k endurance, the hit point stat. So he should have around 45k hit point, plus it adds almost 30k defense. Where a full set of epics give about 3 to 4 k defense. He gets hit with an epic sword which should barely touch him with that defense and almost every time it take 30 percent of his health or more. That's 15k damage from an epic through ten times anyone else defense. This is just wrong. Fix it or I can't grade this higher. Sorry, it is a great story otherwise.
I wanted to give this book four stars, but the rating is based off of my enjoyment of the story. The repeated use of IRL throughout the book ruined the story for me. For me, nobody talks like that, that I know. I have never heard a single person say IRL. So seeing it used multiple times in this book just made me mad and ruined the story. It's lazy writing. Authors should really read a conversation out loud to see if it is actually something a real person would say before putting it in a story. It completely pulled me out of the story. It's sad because the author tells a good story. This one was executed poorly. Again my opinion. You can have a different opinion if you want.
4/10 Seriously I hate the use of IRL in a story, unless the character has written in a note.
This is a very enjoyable series. This book is the sequel short In a two book series in a vast universe. Yet, these two books are easily read as a standalone duo.
