For Once, I Didn't Guess The Killer's Identity!

Branson and the IRONS Family may officially be no more, but Winifred "Fred" and Watson are still having mental problems with everything that's happened the past five years in Estes Park, Colorado. Winifred is still seeing Mara McGinnis, her psychiatric therapist; poor Watson hardly lets Fred out of his sight, for fear he'll lose his mama; Fred is thinking about getting a therapist for Watson; and Charlotte, even though justifiably dead since the last book is still doing evil deeds beyond the grave. This episode is about a literary agent who is murdered. Among the suspects is Ben Pacheco, whose book is supposedly in a bidding war for his new book based on an Native American Indian detective called Coyote. However, the night the literary agent, Hazel Mortimer, is killed, he receives an e-mail saying the bidding war is off. A few hours later, Fred and Watson find Hazel's dead body, shot three times in the chest, in the freshly fallen snow behind the Cozy Corgi Bookstore and Bakery. There are several suspects, but Ben is number one, and Fred fights against time to prove her friend/bookstore employee is innocent of this crime. Hazel was going to re-release the very first book she ever published from 1985, a book that she had said sounded like characters she'd met in Estes Park; such as Anna from the furniture store, the character Abby was just exactly like a twenty-year-old version of Anna, now in her sixties. The 1985 book, "Lavender's Jewels" had several characters that resembled residents of Estes Park, some with names, others nameless. One of the nameless resembled Barry, with his tie-dyed shirt. There was mention of a mother who had an affair with her daughter's husband, and these characters were named. There was a cleaning lady who was nameless. There were other characters, too. The Scooby Gang, usually just a few people, are now a group of eighteen people, along with all their dogs, and one of the participants is a young famous author, Maeve Hawthorne, and her black and white corgi, Mischief, who had come to town to meet her literary agent for the first time AND have her first book signing at the Cozy Corgi Bookstore. All of the Scooby Gang and Large read an e-book copy of "Lavender's Jewels", available online due to Hazel putting it on Amazon, and each person said who they thought certain characters were in real life. That book was fictional, but it was based on the secrets of Estes Falls residents. I forgot to mention earlier that Jeffrey, Hazel's assistant, was not a very nice guy. He accused Ben of killing Hazel, and then not long after, got mad at Detective Susan Greene and fled town, thereby making him another murder suspect. This book is full of suspects, and full of secrets, some revealed and some not revealed. This is one of the only books I've read in this series where I didn't figure out the identity of the killer. I gave this book 5 stars, but the author deserved about 100 stars. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series. I read Books 35, 36, and 37 in a row. Now I'll have to catch up on some of the other series' that I love.

A fun mystery that serves two purposes. It not only lets us catch up with Winifred/Fred and her cranky corgi Watson, but serves to introduce us to an upcoming new series featuring fantasy author Maeve Hawthorn and her corgi, Mischief. Fred is the focus of this story, of course, but we do get a good feel for Maeve as it goes along. Needless to say, Watson is charmed by Mischief, a corgi with a tail! Yes, there is a corgi type with a tail. The plot revolves around the murder of Maeve's agent while she's visiting the Cozy Corgi for a book signing afterward.

I won't detail the plot but it has lots of angst, drama, suspicious minds, writing and publishing woes, secrets, and, yes, lots of doggie antics. There's also a deep dive into past history with attitudes toward, let's say, those who don't conform to norms. Given some of Fred's family members, she has lots of first hand resource information, even if she does have to endure Percival's determination to jazz up her clothing choice in the process. The usual gang seems to largely be accounted for, from family members to Anna and her wild dogs. Only Watson, who has earned the title Sgt. Fleabag from the police chief, seems able to control them and even he has his limits. I did like that Fred, who has suffered tons of trauma during the run of this series, is not only going to therapy sessions but seems to be taking it to heart. True, she's still overthinking it at times, doubting her instincts, but she's definitely in a better place.

Bottom line, a quick, easy read with its share of tension and humor, the latter usually supplied by the dogs. Enjoyed this excursion into Fred's often quirky world and am looking forward to getting to know Maeve and Mischief .... with that name, you just know there will be doggie antics .... in the new series.

As ever, I loved this installment in the series!

Another great read from Mildred Abbot! This series is so much fun I probably bore everyone I know telling them about it. The only thing I disliked this time was Anna failing to take any responsibility whatsoever for her horrible behavior. She was not just rude to Fred and Katie, but to several others and even caused a large extra expense. I loved how this book featured so many of my favorite characters and also set up future characters and dropped breadcrumbs for future plots. One of the charcters mentions her fiance, an engagement which I don't think has been celebrated yet, or even mentioned. Fred missed it and the comment just slid by.Please keep 'em comin'! I love this fun little literary world of Fred's.

Another amazing mystery!❤️. This one was another murder involving more secrets revealed! Ben was singled out as the murderer since it was his agent and his contract was questionable! Turns out the assistant was mad about being overlooked for a promotion so he was a suspect! A book that was revealed at the book signing with Mauve and Mischief her Corgi, the book had a lot of hidden secrets! In the end Ben was no longer a suspect and his contract with the dead agent had been taken over by another agent and the waitress named Ruby finally admitting to killing her best friend that was gay and the agent! Definitely need to read!

25-39. My friend Linda has been gone since March 2024. She loved corgis. We started the this series together. I think of her when I read these books. Great story, Linda. I enjoyed how many people were involved, the red herrings, and the confusion. Fred, Watson, Leo, etc are a family that are what I consider "unlucky" since they come across so many murder victims in this little town. I love Watson. He is a great character. I purchased this e-book from Amazon.

a true mystery

What a wonderful story. Good Ploy line, well written. Holds your attention to the surprising climax. Yearbooks are good for something. Even Watson gets to experience corgi “love.” I strongly recommend this book.

Love all the Cozy Corgi books

Naughty Novels was one special book. I love all of the human and canine characters. The way Mildred writes gives such insight into them that you feel like they are friends. After reading all 37 of her books I guess they are friends and family, too.

What a ride with this one! I never expected the murderer to be HER! I got everything in this novel from a cardigan corgi added to the mix, a little witchcraft, a new life for a coyote, a yummy recipe, and best of all... an awesome spin off series!!! Squeeeee!

Absolutely fantastic! Somehow I skipped this book, but references were made to it that forced (no arm twisting) to go back and catch up. I was totally floored at one major piece of information.
As always, the characters continue to grow on you. This has been one series i will always remember.

It was a little challenging with all the characters and time periods. I did loose track at times. But the ending brought it all back together. Love the characters.
