A powerful tale of growth and survival unfolds as fifteen-year-old Ben is initiated into the Of the Waterfall tribe and must journey through an Arizona cave to three different ancient eras
Malcolm Joseph Bosse (May 6, 1926 – May 3, 2002) was an American author of both young adult and adult novels. His novels are often set in Asia, and have been praised for their cultural and historical information relating to the character's adventures. Bosse mostly wrote historical fiction novels after the publication of The Warlord, a historical fiction work set in 1920's China, which became a best-seller. He also won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1983.
Bosse was born in Detroit, Michigan and died in New York City. He was a graduate of Yale University and served in the U.S. Navy. Bosse was also an English teacher in City College of New York in Manhattan.
My son and I read this together. Unbeknownst to both of us, we started it just before a great tragedy would strike our family, and so the themes whispered throughout mirrored what we ourselves had to learn. Forever grateful that Malcolm Bosse sat down and wrote this great novel.
A short and fast read, Cave Beyond Time by Malcolm Bosse covers an uncommon plot with a time travel twist. It felt juvenile since it was written from the young orphan boy's point of view as he is bitten by rattlesnakes and then has a vision rabbit lead him down a road to prehistoric times. Although oddly enjoyable since it was so different, I don't expect it to make a big splash outside of preteen to early teen ages. Fascinating and very well-developed, a young man is injured and somehow travels back in time to three different eras. Written from a young man's point of view, this is a book very much worth reading.
