This series is for fans of old fashioned adventure sci-fi. If you're looking for hard sci-fi, look elsewhere. But if you enjoy endless space battles and wall-to-wall fun, read on!
Kelly is one of many human heroes who is sent on an important mission. After nearly dying in a fiery explosion on his last assignment, he is given time to recuperate and then assigned a new gunship, The Renegade, who's official purpose is to ferry diplomats to the enemy territory to continue negotiating a peace accord.
Personally, he is tasked with the overall command of the Renegade with the additional task of extracting two intelligence officers that have been undercover amidst the ranks of the enemy for the past Five years and to bring them home for debriefing.
This series is spread over Nine books and this review will have a section for each book. The First book being " The Renegade" and the above being part of the review for this section.
The author, has usual, uses his gift to take the readers on a virtual adventure through space where Sabotage exists but accountability is lacking no proof being brought forward, dedication to duty, action, mistrusts, new friendships, new alien races and the urgency to save one's people existence.
2- Undercover
Kelly has succeeded in his mission by retrieving Storm and Dek from their undercover posting in the enemy's territory and taken them aboard the Renegade with the purpose of bringing them back to his own side of the Seam where they will be debriefed. A number of obstacles are in his way, though like: The fact that Dek is showing signs of erratic crazy behavior with an annoying habit of speaking in a language that he does not understand. The fact that Storm lives on a planet where several enemy citizens, who do not want to be found, have elected to reside. The fact that the Renegade has the habit of being captured by Biaes ships, taken aboard and the crew interrogated by Biaes intelligence or line Officers and that, each time, they get away at the precise moment the Biaes ships explode.
Even being an officer in Aellas navy Intelligence corps, circumstances such as that are proving to be more and more troublesome for Kelly who suspects lesss and less the Biaes from being responsible for the sabotages to the Aellas Navy Ships as their own are also being sabotaged.
Kelly again finds himself recuperating in the hospital with one big clue that he has yet to share with the Command Authority.
The series continues to be filled with action and filled with questions more than answers as to who is the perpetrator of all the sabotages.
3- Explosive
Luka Kelly, under an alias name ( Julian Leblanc), has made an alliance of some kind with the Biaes high military command, represented by top ranking officers and is currently meeting with them along with his immediate superior, colonel Carver with the goal of finding out who is committing these acts of sabotage against both sides vessels and to what end.
However, the curse continues to follow them as every ship they land on or are brought to, explodes.
In this book, the renegade's crew gets closer and closer to identifying, not only the perpetrator of the acts of sabotage against both Navy ships, but also, the composing ingredients of the explosives used.
4- Blindsided
After returning to the main Aellas base, where one of the diplomatic corps member has proven to be part of the new species responsible for the many sabotages, the spy is arrested and submitted to tests as well as a thorough interrogation by the Aellas Navy Intelligence corps.
Not only is the spy cooperative but he has no secret about what his species, the Ahraels, intends to do. He also emphasizes that Kelly has a key role to play in the species plans and tries to recruit Luka.
Luka Kelly not only rejects the offer but sets out with his Renegade crew to search and take back the Ostracine, a volatile substance that is part of the components stolen by the enemy.
The author attacks the search and retrieval portion of this series in a masterful way subjecting the main characters to a series unforseen turnovers as well as events that grabs the reader and keeps him or her riveted to the book.
5- Battle Lines.
Caught by the Biaes after escaping the planet where they were located Kelly is returned with his crew to his main base where he dreads facing Colonel Carver, having been captured, not having any Ostracine with him and returning with a busted ship.
Throughout this captivating book, Luka and his crew, with the addition of a squadron of fighters, will go through various situations where their courage, loyalty, morality and humanity will be put to the test.
The author appears to masterfully be preparing the reader to face a change in Luka and his crew mates direction with respect to how they view and see themselves continuing to fight for the greater good in this never ending war where a fourth group of combatants, the independents, have now joined the frey. I look forward to the next book.
6- Over the line.
Kelly is getting more and more suspicious and desillusionned with respect to the intentions and actions of both the Aellas Navy and Biaes Division. How can someone keep fighting a war that has has been going on for ages and has taken an enormous death tole on their respective populations.
Having been sent out to retrieve the Ostracine without any success, although being shot at, injured and even humiliated as he was suspected of being a traitor and was imprisoned for no good reason by the REMFs, he and the crew comes back and Luka is taken to meet with command and is again accused of negligence, sharing with the enemy and ordered to retrieve the Ostracine at any cost, otherwise he might suffer loss of rank and even imprisonment.
Being highly decorated and having served faithfully for decades, Luka is getting fed up with that attitude and, when he spots the command Authorities of Both the Aellas and the Biaes considering attacks on the civilian population as collateral damage, he feels like he is at his wits end.
The author makes a point to prove that when one thinks that one is at one's wits end, there is probably something else that can certainly drive one over the edge.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this captivating series.
7- Missing piece
Pursued by everyone, Luka and the Renegade crew discover an abomination that will affect their decision to pursue the mission either for the Navy or the Biaes or even the Ahraels. What has happened is so beneath contempt that the faith of the Renegade and it's crew will be affected.
Being continually lied to by all parties will do that to the crew.
In this book, the author has tied my hands. I cannot elaborate without giving the plot away.
However, each page is worth reading.
8- Breakneck Run
Kelly and his crew have suffered losses, the first since the beginning of the mission, and the effect it has on Kelly is devastating.
However, they don't have time to dwell on it as they face multiple attacks and capture/evasion situations throughout this part of the story.
Everytime it appears that the team is getting closer to it's goal, something happens to delay the outcome.
Another great chapter in this story by this great author.
9- Betrayal
What an ending. The author succeeds in keeping the reader riveted untill the end. There is a mission, a purpose, challenges to face, obstacles to surmount, a centennial old war to resolve, main characters to eliminate and a twisted truth to reveal.
Add multiple twists and turns doubled with an act of friendship and ultimate sacrifice and you get a series that ranks to the top of the list, that I highly recommend and rate 5 Stars +++++++++++++++
Luka Kelly is a rather strange character himself despite being an undercover military on the Aellas side. This is the side where humans and aliens freely interact, though only a few alien races are known and interacted with. Nevertheless, he is rather s good human being with some rather unique talents as well, not the least of which is his care for quite an insane undercover agent that is called Deck. Then there are the Biaes, who refuse to have anything to do with aliens. Perhaps the reason for these two groups having escalated their differences into a full scale war. And a very deadly one too. That is , until Luka Kelly discovers a brand new and very much undercover alien race. A quite deadly one too called the Ahrael. And one that neither the Aellas or the Biaes , singly or together, have any hope in ever defeating the war. Or can they? Quite frankly, I have never encountered an alien entity as alien as these Ahreal in any book whatsoever and the very thought of such really have chills running down my spine. This box set by author Daniel Young , Containing the complete Stership Renegade saga, is sure to keep you occupied for days as you follow the exploits of a completely mindboggling and very submersive space adventure Enjoy
Much as I try to write minimalist reviews, this one's a bit more difficut. I enjoyed this series, even though it was, at times, too long and convoluted. Luka Kelly is/was the real hero of this saga. The aliens were a bit strange until, at the end, we learned there were two camps; they fought over the whole idea of blowing up the Seam. As for this being a good movie of the mind, it might work, if condensed. Kirkwell, Ives, Deck [both when crazy and when sane], and the rest of Kelly's crew, along with Joyner, were all quite interesting and at times most complicated. If you have time and patience, read these 9 books.
This series promised old fashioned adventure scifi and it totally delivered. Lots of humans and aliens causing trouble and drama with some intrigue and secrets thrown in for added fun. It had me laughing and moaning a lot but I was entertained. A plucky hero and his crew are on a trip full of trouble and action and adventure. Kept me reading to the end of the set to see what craziness everyone would get themselves into and how they would escape the chaos and drama. Who was loyal was the question at times. Loved it.
While I liked the general plot, the characters weren’t fully developed. The scene settings were light. I think this story could have been told in 3 books instead of the 9. It seemed liked the author stretched out battles and repeated them, just to make money. I’d give this series a hard pass.
exciting book kept you interested from page one to the very end
This book was very interesting and kept you on and from page one all the way through to the end there was something happening on every page so you really couldn’t put the book down. You just had to keep on reading until you finally reached the end and found out what the final outcome was
This was a good story with plenty of action and a great wrap up at the end. The thing that I had a problem with was the very excessive times the lead characters were captured and managed to escape. It was as though the author used this scenario to lengthen the series substantially.
This series moves you through so many events that your mind is stretched from pillar to post. I can’t recommend this series to every one, Daniel Young never lets you down and this series exceeds expectations.
The box set was great together . the transfer from each book was great (which I is always try to purchase) box sets). Good characters descriptions and involvements
Four races populate this section or space. Humans and three others. Of course not everyone can accept the other races. Bigotry and pride start a war that has been going on for over a century. Suddenly a fifth chameleon race decides to end the war.
It is a very good story. I like that it reminds me of the books I read when I was in middle school. I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions. I also people will enjoy reading this box set.
Totally awesome, there’s no way that anyone wants to miss out. Space, fights , suspense and definitely danger. Will keep you reading until the last page.
I enjoyed the whole series it was easy to read and understand, I like the premises of the story but there just was too much repeating in the action parts of the story.
