New Amsterdam: Tess

Rate this book
Thessaly Sinclair owns an artisanal shop in the historic Seaport district of Lower Manhattan. She’s savvy and charming, and appears to have it all, but a romantic hang-up is holding her back from experiencing true love.

**From the Author**
New Amsterdam is dedicated to the Humans of New York

In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton began an ambitious project – to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. The photos he took and the accompanying interviews became the blog Humans of New York (St. Martin’s, 2015).

A Visual Reading Experience: Looking Through the Eyes of a Camera Lens

New Amsterdam: Tess, the first in a series of “petite novels” by Ashley Pullo, is a wonderful, visual experience for the reader. Full of great imagery and detailed, witty prose, this novel is an entertaining and fun read. Pullo puts her signature touch on the book with her unique writing style, which takes the reader on a sensory experience of New York City. It’s as if I were inside the book itself walking along with the characters.

The book is about a young woman in her 20s named Tess, who is the owner of a small artisanal honey shop in NYC, although the book is written in a way that you get not only her point of view, but also perspectives from all of the characters who are connected to Tess. Pullo takes the reader inside the head of many different characters who surround Tess. The reader gets insight in not only their daily lives but past experiences as well. Pullo connects the dots on how these characters intertwine with each other. She doesn’t miss a single detail.

Tess has a little bit of everything: a young woman who is searching for love and success in her business, a charming love story between a couple, and a unique look inside urban millennials starting up organic businesses in NYC. Pullo writes New York well and that is no exception in this novel. She takes the reader through a tour of NYC as seen through the eyes of a young urban creative trying to make a name for herself in this vast sea of so many others.

Pullo specializes in writing authentic characters and there are many to enjoy in Tess. The secondary characters are just as intriguing as the main character herself. I felt like I was watching a movie unfold through a series of scenes behind a lens. A fun and delightful read, Tess is one to pick up if you want to cozy up on your sofa during a rainy afternoon or spend a day at the beach. It had me smiling and wishing for honey and shaved ice after I finished reading! This is a wonderful debut into women’s fiction by this author.

An advanced reader’s copy was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

This book is unlike anything I've read before. The format is completely unique, and as a follower of HONY, I sense the connection and love how Ashley has woven the stories of her characters into tales like those Humans of New York. It's brilliant. And speaking of her characters, how can you not love them all? Tess is fascinating and I loved the idea of her shop. I want it to exist and I want to buy all the things. :) This was just so clever and I wish I'd read it sooner. I'm happy it's a series because I'm excited to read more stories like this!

Drawing inspiration from the popular blog Humans of New York, the New Amsterdam series takes a look at the lives, loves, and struggles of young New Yorkers. In this first installment, we meet Tess, owner of a boutique specializing in artisanal honey and other locally and organically sourced sundries. When she meets Levi, the owner of a rooftop gardening collective, there is an instant connection, but what unfolds is not your typical romance.

Throughout the book, coined as a petite novel, we’re introduced to an ensemble cast of characters that give life to a story full of depth and heart. Tess and Levi buck hipster stereotypes by embracing their roots; the family, friends, and circumstances that have shaped who they have become, without the unnecessary angst or entitlement that have become synonymous with Millennials. (Like the cynicism of the generation before them.) The story is endearing, the characters are relatable, and the result feels serendipitous.

While Tess is a standalone story, I highly suggest the books be read in order. If you’re familiar with Pullo’s work you know that she’s a master of weaving individual character’s lives in even the most abstract ways, creating stories within stories. For fans of her first series Discography, there’s even a nod to one of its supporting characters, which, if you loved the series as much as I did, it instantly brought a smile to my face. It’s Pullo’s use of those connections, coupled with her use of pop culture, both past and present, that make her stories not only easily relatable, but also make them transcend the genres of simply contemporary romance or Chick-Lit.

After reading Ashley's Discography series I've come to expect a certain level of romance, but part of the romance is the build up leading to it. That is Tess!

The characters are charming and witty! Young entrepreneurs conquering NYC while exposing real life stories along the way. Ashley's realistic writing pulls you into the story and you feel like you're right there with them! You want to be their friends, know more about them and what happens next!

The chemistry is buzzing and the flirtatious moments lead you on laughing all the way.

This is an easy read for a lazy afternoon and you will love it! A MUST read.

Charming, Witty and Brilliantly Entertaining - Pullo regales readers with a story of friendships, family, love and the journey towards self-realization.

I was richly invested in these characters, the relationships they cultivated and their respective stories. It was full of awkward encounters, quirky characters and humorous banter - all things I have come to adore from Pullo's writing style. The romance woven into the story was exciting and accompanied by an intense attraction and wickedly seductive sarcasm...an element Pullo excels at crafting.

I just want to take a minute to appreciate the awesome that is Thessaly. I was not keen on the shortening of the name to Tess at first, but I found it be fitting as I got to know her. Tess was someone I would be thrilled to have as a friend in real life. She was charismatic with a hint of insecurity - traits that are genuinely appealing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am anxious for the next installment in the New Amsterdam series, Julia, which is due to release sometime in 2016.

4.5 Stars...

Reading Tess was an experience for me. I knew going in this was women's fiction with romantic elements. I normally read 'regular' romance but I was pleased with how quickly I was immersed in Tess' character and her world. This story is all about the characters and the vivid imagery the author creates with her scenes and story.

The New Amsterdam series are shorter novels/long novellas and I won't lie, I wish it was longer. And that's because I found these characters so witty and engaging that I just want more! However, I can learn to be happy with what I have. I laughed out loud several times and the pages practically turned themselves. It took me a few pages to get used to the POV... it's told in third person omniscient (so kind of like a narrator). As soon as I got used to it, it worked. It was almost like watching a TV or movie.

I definitely recommend reading this. It's not traditional romance but it's a quick and light read with great characters, a lot of fun, and a swoony guy or two.

I've come to expect that when I read a book by Ashley Pullo it will have tight, concise writing, a sense of place as strong as any character, pop culture references, witty dialogue, and characters I want to be friends with. That was the only expectation I had going into this book from her new series, and it was everything I wanted it to be! If you like Humans of New York, are a fan of character-driven plot, and you like strong female characters who lead the story... read this book!

I wouldn't call myself a rabid Humans of New York fan, but I've always had an appreciation for Brandon's work and the stories he tells. I even had the opportunity to listen to him speak a few years ago at a conference, but that's a little off topic. (He was amazing though.) New York City is such a mixing pot and humans are fascinating. He does a great job of telling their stories. The same can be said for Ashley Pullo and this series.

Tess (the book) was unique and charming and I basically inhaled it. The writing was gorgeous. I found myself totally sucked into the story between Tess and Levi. And, if I'm honest, the story of every single side character introduced during this novella. The characters are rich and the stories compelling, even though it's mostly every day events that are told. Maybe that's why they're so fascinating, actually. Regardless, I loved the format and the storytelling and, for someone who absolutely loves New York City like I do, Tess (the book) was almost like a love letter to the city itself.

FAVORITE QUOTES

"Yes, Tess, a soft peach. Now, an impatient man would rip into the tender flesh and swallow up the golden fruit like a novice — missing all the sweet juice that trails down his hand as he selfishly reaches for another. But I will wait until you're ripe."

Love is pure. Love is organic. Love is raw. Love is sweet. Love is non-perishable?

4.5 STARS!

I agree with the other readers who said this story is a visual experience: I felt completely immersed in Thessaly Sinclair's world. I loved living in this beautiful microcosm for a few hours. I adored all the characters and their backstories (minus Paul), and I fell in love with the author's fluid lyricism.
My only complaint?
I wish I could have lived in Tess's world a little bit longer.

You want a book that tells it like it is about New Yorker's with a love story mixed into it?  Then this is the book for you!

Ashley Pullo totally captured the feel of living in New York in your 20's with this story of Tess & her journey finding herself and those around her.

As soon as I started reading this book, I fell in love with Tess, Levi and all the characters.  They are funny, loving, smart mouths who instantly hold a place in my heart.  I am a New Yorker so I could totally relate to how Tess felt about struggling to find herself and owning it.  Also could totally relate to the dating scene in NYC. It's a tough one!

Tess & Levi = An awesome couple who felt so real and so what I wish I could have in my life some day.

Ashley Pullo knows how to write stories that you can relate to.  She adds her special spicy ingredient the only way she knows how & it just traps you in!

Well developed characters, real life events, NYC as the backdrop.. its the perfect read!

Go grab your fall blanket, put on your comfy PJ's and get your Hot Cocoa or  Starbucks coffee and enjoy this wonderful read by Ashley.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment in this book.

A Must Read for 2015!

One of Ashley Pullo's greatest strengths as a writer is her ability to paint a picture for the reader with her witty and descriptive prose. Tess was no exception. I felt that I was right there with her in New York, visualizing The Hive, Seaport, Brooklyn Soil, and everything along the way...even though I have never actually been to NYC.

"As the taxi picks up speed across the Brooklyn Bridge, the fading sunlight drips through the rusty cables and casts hues of sepia on the cars below. It's a timeless photograph waiting to be captured."

If this quote doesn't draw you right in, then I don't know what will. Perhaps the well-developed characters, the humor, or the ease in which the reader can form their own mental images?

Thessaly Sinclair's story begins at her family farm near Asheville, North Carolina, where her love of honey began. After college, she followed a boy to New York...only to be cast aside as his career picked up. Luckily, she fell in love with the city, and was happy to wait for him to come to his senses while she opened up her own artisanal honey shop, The Hive.

Levi Jones is a rooftop farmer, and owner of Brooklyn Soil. He pursued a hesitant Thessaly after literally running into her in front of her shop. Unlike her former boyfriend in every way, Tess isn't sure that Levi is someone she wants to take a chance on...even though she can't deny her attraction to him.

From the beginning of the story to the end, Pullo's writing draws the reader in. The first of her New Amsterdam series, Tess certainly sets the stage for more intriguing stories to come. We caught character references for Darby and Julia, both characters that will have their stories told in future installments of the New Amsterdam series. I await their releases with bated breath!

I fell in love with Ashley's writing while reading The Album. Not only is she witty but she has an amazing, unique style of prose. Her characters become your friends and they are hard to let go of once you are done the book. So, of course I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy of Tess. Like the Discography series, Ashley introduces the reader with surprisingly real characters and situations. For me, her stories also have a magical element to them - magical in the sense that you wish something so wonderful and profound would happen to you in your life.

Tess could be my friend. Single, independent, looking backwards at love instead of facing forward; she is the person I was once upon a time. I think we all have had a little of Tess inside of us at one time or another. I loved her loyalty to her friends and her fierce determination to stand on her own two feet. Her evolving relationships with her friends, love ones and amorous relationships are also something that every reader can relate to in one way or another.

Tess and Levi = my favorite kind of magic - romance where you least expect it.

If I had to pick one word to describe Ashley's writing in Tess it would be elegant. The story flows like a beautiful dance between the characters. I am so looking forward to getting to know more of the characters in the rest of the New Amsterdam series!

Ms. Pullo gave me a copy for feeback and my honest review and all I can think about is honey. Honey is the family business for Tess, even making a boutique store selling to various businesses and events. The variety of honey and beverages described have given me reason to hunt some down. Tess is a lovely young lady with a naive dream of being married to Mason, the man she followed to New York. While he enjoyed the playboy lifestyle Tess matured and began a successful business without any interest from him. A chance encounter, while staring at her cell phone and walking, she met a gorgeous man with a dangerously sexy mouth and a brain too. If you have read Pullo's first series you will recognize the name of a restauranteur and maybe giggle a little. Pullo has a way of flowing the story line into a masterpiece involving every character, brothers and friends alike.
Very excited about the next two stories for Julia and Darby.

First, I have read all of Ashley's books so far, and this, this, this! Loved every word. It was charming, sexy, adorable and addicting. I read it in two sittings, and was in a better mood both times for it. Her characters are delightful and memorable, the love story believable (haven't we all been in that place between two choices??!) and the backdrop of Asheville and Manhattan were colorful and creative. I am so excited to read the next two! Do yourself a favor, make a pot of coffee (or open a bottle of wine!) and get lost in the fantastic book.

"Love is pure. Love is organic. Love is raw. Love is sweet. Love is non-perishable? Love is wild honey."

So happy that I was introduced to Ashley Pullo's books! I fell in love with The Album/The Ballad and needed more of her refreshing writing style....so of course I looked for her next book which is Tess and proceeded to devour every word. I truly enjoyed this story of Tess and her quirky friends, her coming into her own bold self, the sexy and fun romance that develops...kept me smiling and glued to the page and now I must read Julia!!!

I absolutely loved reading New Amsterdam: Tess by Ashley Pullo. I loved reading Thessaly's story of love, dedication and finding the one true love. Thessaly has a past romance that continues to hold her back from finding her one true love. I thought the author did an amazing job at capturing the characters and making you care for them. I can't wait to read more by Ashley Pullo.

A tad slow at first, but once we see Tess in action in NYC the story became so much more interesting. It was a great story that mainly focused on Tess but we also got snapshots of other characters that are in Tess’s life, whether her friends or random people she encounters. I wished there would’ve been a bit more to Tess’s story but I don’t think this is what the author intended with this book.

I’d previously read the Album and Ballad stories from this author and had Tess sitting idle and forgotten on my kindle. But so glad I rediscovered it and decided to dig in. Looking forward to the others in this series.

4 /2 stars, I adored this!!
My only complaint: I wish it was a full sized novel. Because this is one of those joyous read with a smile on your face kind of read, snorting at the witty infused humour. But, I know this is part 1 of 4, and more is to come soon.
I'm familiar with this author's other novels from the Discography series. This new series continues Ashley's poignant writing of New York. Intelligent, witty, heartfelt, likeable characters who are fleshed out and real. Secondary characters make a book for me, and I loved Seth and Meg! Thessaly and Levi, love love loved!!
This is a wonderful Gem of a novella, low on angst, yet high on character and fun. I highly recommend it for healing your heart in between angsty books. There may seem to be a history lesson at the start of the book. Read it, it's quite humorous, and sets the scene of New York. Then you get thrown into the gorgeousness of a sweet little honey and homemade jams shop, and it's motley crew of characters working there, trying to find their way in life. Charming, whimsical, humorous, sexy.

*I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Having read all of Ashley Pullo's previous books, I went into New Amsterdam: Tess expecting her unique, descriptive writing style. What I experienced was love at first sentence... I totally fell in love with everything about the characters, the setting, the story. Dare I say - this is her best work yet!

Inspired by the blog Humans of New York, Tess follows the story of Thessaly Sinclair (Tess) - small town girl now living in Lower Manhattan and running her own artisanal honey shop.

From the very first page, I was totally absorbed in this story. The characters are so fun and likable - I want to be friends with Tess and Meg and Seth and Levi. Their witty banter had me smiling from the first word to the last.

In Pullo's signature style, every sentence paints a picture. I mean...

"Primitive. Uncultivated. Luxuriant. Nectarous. Sensual." Pausing for effect, Thessaly watches as her friends' faces flicker with excitement. "And starting in a few weeks, The Hive will be Lower Manhattan's supplier of wild honey."

I want to move to New York and work at the Hive!

Every character in this story is memorable in his or her own way. Even the secondary characters are so well developed that I still find myself thinking about them weeks later. (I especially want to know more about Lucas!) If you've read the author's previous works, also look for a brief appearance by a beloved character from her Discography series.

This story is perfection. Ashley Pullo's Tess is a breath of fresh air in the world of women's fiction. She has a way of bringing the story and her characters full circle, while taking the reader on an entertaining, enlightening journey through the streets of New York.

Sweet as honey, with a touch of sexiness and angst, the story of Tess captures the essence of life as a 20-something New Yorker. This is the first in a series of petite novels. At the end of this story, we get a brief glimpse of Julia from the next book. I absolutely cannot wait to read the rest of this series!

Gah! Tess is such a cute, light-hearted romance that takes place in the heart of New York, a place I could never live, but have always been mesmerized by. I absolutely adored how fun and effervescent the whole story felt. I’ve been having a hard time getting a book to really pull me in lately, but Ashley Pullo certainly did the trick!

“Give bold a chance, Tess.”

Perhaps my favorite thing about the story as a whole was how unique it felt. Yes, it was about a boy and a girl, but that’s about the extent of similarities to others in the genre that I could find. The heroine was a honey distributor, the hero did so much good I was searching for a flaw…and heck, even the names were unique and exuberant. Pullo doesn’t just deliver charismatic characters and a love story; she produces such vivid scenes that you can smell, taste, and truly visualize everything described. You’re pulled into the New York City lifestyle without physically being there. She certainly has a gift for pulling readers into the world she creates, making it is so easy to get lost in the pages.

“Love? Honestly, I’m not sure. I think I know what it would feel like to love someone, but I’ve never experienced that feeling.”

Naturally, what happens with novellas (even though this was a little longer than one) happened here, and I was left aching for more. Heck, I’m drooling for more of Tess and Levi, but all of the secondary characters as well. Tess was full of steam and spice as well as indecision and moments of wanting to shake the characters. However, there were also tender moments that felt real and heart-filled. I’m definitely anxious to dive into the next New Amsterdam novel and see just where Ashley Pullo decides to take us next!

Ashley Pullo is the master of sweet, endearing, emotion packed vignettes. I'm a BIG fan of her other books, The Album and The Ballad. Her newest, Tess, did not disappoint.

Inspired by Humans of New York, this "short novel" is centered around sorta-random, every day people. But, they're wonderful! They have interesting lives and careers and emotions. Like Pullo's previous books, you can see how lives intertwine and the decisions/interactions of one character may impact another without even knowing it.

I think Tess is an exceptional heroine. She's independent, smart, caring and hard-working. And, it is all of those qualities that attracts Levi who has the same wonderful characteristics. Their romance is quirky, real, honest and sweet. The cast of supporting characters adds to the overall charm of the story. (Meg and Seth are adorable!) The romance is absolutely swoony and a little steamy!

Tess is the first of the New Amsterdam series. Don't be surprised if you find yourself craving peaches and honey. I'll be waiting anxiously to read Julia and Darby!

In addition to the overall rating, BFF Book Blog uses a series of icon ratings. This book received additional ratings for: hero, heroine, romance, supporting characters, sweet and steamy. An ARC was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Tess knows honey. Her family owns a large farm that, amongst many things, collects honey. Tess has a little boutique in New York City that sells artisanal honey. Lately, her life has revolved around her business while she waits for Mason to come back to her. Mason and Tess were college sweethearts. She followed Mason to New York City thinking they were going to spend the rest of their lives together. But life had different plans for them and they decided to take a break. They both assumed they would get back together when the time was right. But New York City has a funny way of showing you what more there can be to life.

One thing Ashely Pullo does well is witty prose that is full of detail and imagery. You can't help read something she has written and feel like you are right there. And Tess is no exception. While Tess is the first in a series of "petite novels" the story feel complete. We get to meet several characters that are in Tess's life that give the story a rich depth. I suspect, and hope, that some of these characters might show up in the future stories. And while I loved Tess my favorite was probably Levi. *sigh* Levi.

This is my first book by Ashley Pullo. It's a contemporary romance with a little humor. The author has a witty writing style that spurs you to want to read more. It was tough to put the book down. The characters are well defined and you want to know more about them.

This could have been a four stars review for me but two of my pet peeves were woven in throughout the book.

One - I hate product placement. I don't watch a lot of television because I hate commercials. I don't want commercials in the books I read. This book had product placement everywhere. Blah.

Two - Perfect worlds do not exist. Everybody is not successful, beautiful, wealthy, witty, and charming all at once. In this story, they are. Even the bum on the street has wit and charm. I know this is fiction but throw in some grit or realism.

It's not a bad story and was enjoyable. If my pet peeves don't bother you then I would recommend this book.

What a breath of fresh air this book is. Being a big fan of Ashley’s work, after being teased all summer with post about her new series, New Amsterdam, I was looking forward to getting my copy of Tess.
The story of Tess is refreshing because Tess could be any of us. I just love how she has traditional values, but still has that spunk in her that makes her a wildflower in New York City. Tess is not the only character that I enjoyed in the story, Seth and Meg are the friends everyone wish to have in their lives. Mason and Levi… well if I tell you about them, you won’t get to experience the great love triangle, now will you.
What I also loved about this story is that it’s to the point. Ashley doesn’t drag on with the storyline, she actually leaves you wanting for more… And more I want!!!! Looking forward to the other 2 books and who knows maybe even more?

Tess

I adored this light, funny, and sexy read from Ashley. It was my first of hers and she did not disappoint. I felt like I was a part of the story, as if Tess was an old friend. I've never been to NYC, but Ashley made it possible to imagine with her beautiful writing. I loved so much that this story was different from anything else I've read. Yes it's romance, but it's also more than that. It's about family, friendship, love, and Tess learning that she deserves more than she gives herself credit for. I didn't stop smiling while reading. From the funny parts, to the sexy parts. This is a great story to bring you out of a slump. It heals your heart. This was an incredibly unique story, and I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Tess owns a shop in downtown NY that sells honey and hand crafted jams. Levi is a Brooklyn rooftop farmer.

Tess is still hoping to get back together with her ex, Mason, who she is currently in a friends-with-benefits type relationship. She followed him from North Carolina to New York and then they broke up. When she meets Levi, she is attracted to him but not willing to move on from Mason.

As with the other books in by this author, the main characters are not the only focus of the story and the supporting cast is just as interesting. Throughout the series, we do see some recurring characters as well as characters from the Discography Series.

I couldn't put it down.

A great summer read!

This is my new favorite summer book! It's about a woman named Tess who owns her own artisan honey/jam shop in NYC. It's all about how she gets over an old love and finds a new one. It also shows her busy life with her business and friends.
I like that he book jumps perspectives between the characters, and I really like that you get a glimpse into each characters life. I like that it's a romance without the sex scenes (although they are certainly alluded too).
Warning! You will be looking for honey vodka lemonade recipes by the end of this book!! And have a craving for peaches....

What a charming story. This quick and witty read was fun, funny and fresh.

Tess and Levi reminded me of Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox from you've got mail. Instead of Godfather references, there were endearing nods of a much more humorous nature to Pee Wee's big adventure. The only way it could have gotten any better would have been to sneak something in there about Simone's big but.

I hope there will be more in this series. I read Julia before Tess and although I see the transition from one story line to the next, it was no issue reading them out of order.
