Tom Carey is a priest in crisis. The Church is beset by scandal and he himself is haunted by the face of a woman he once secretly loved. Burying himself in his work as Port Chaplain on a busy river, but finds himself caught up in the murky world of people-smuggling.
A Catholic priest having a spiritual crisis is transferred to a new assignment as a port chaplain. He must deal with scandals among his fellow clergy, the goings-on in the port (including prostitution and the nefarious activities of a Russian sea-captain), and also his feelings for a nun he once knew.... Loved it. Reminded me of Morris West in its revelation of the human weaknesses of the clergy. Some of the characters do perhaps skirt a bit close to stereotypes (especially the feminist nun and the scheming bishop) but generally a great read.
