English This second volume in the series Studies in the Historical Study of the Theatrical Audience, has two central analysis and an offering of primary sources. The documentary section offers edited sources from the history from the 18th and early 19th century, which offers detailed information about the performance of stage actors and actresses and materially attests to the serious discussions, led by literary and theatrical journals, over the role and meaning of the audience. The two essays in the preceding analytical section undertake an initial evaluation of the source material and clarify that the historical study of the audience is an integral part of the cultural history of the theater.
