This is Dr Andrew’s powerful memoir of his life from early childhood in Malaysia. He tells of his education at several different schools and his meaningful friendships. Stories of his family and their house moves are told. His training to be a medical doctor is shared, and his subsequent working life, including time spent in New Zealand. Dr Andrew’s faith is strong and he takes two years out to attend Bible College. Even in retirement he has carved out another career as a writer. At the end of each chapter there is an apt poem. Some photographs have been included too. An interesting and varied life lived to the full, dedicated to serving others in the service of God. Recommend
I pictured I was picking up a doctor's memoir, some sort of inspirational life book with some wry aphorisms. From Stethoscope to Wisdom by Dr. Andrew C.S. Koh? Sipping an afternoon tea with some sage old grandfather figure, listening to this fellow who's been around the block a few times, struggled hard, got disillusioned, doubted himself, and came out at the other end, dispensing his heart in the best manner possible.
Dr. Koh's path starts in a tiny Malaysian village, and he has big dreams and even bigger hurdles. Come on, how many actually leave there to become a renowned cardiologist? Less than one would have hoped, but this guy did. And not just through pure talent, mind you, but through perseverance, belief, and the kind of pig-headedness that makes you want to grab him by the hand and scream, "Damn, you did it."
What I did not expect, however, was just how far the emotion would stretch. His daughter in law, Tina, is really sort of the unsung heroine of this book. She is not a secondary character, she is the glue that holds it all together. She was there for him when the world was too much to handle and had faith in him when he was unable to believe in himself, and by doing so, she showed me exactly how powerful encouragement and love are. We do not talk nearly enough about those working behind the scenes who support us when we are falling apart, this book does.
How does Dr. Koh weave his memories with poems and photos? It doesn't sound like a book, it sounds like somebody's scrapbook of a good life. Something so real, so raw about it. No ego, no attitude, just a guy reflecting on his life, his faith, his failures, and his successes. And learning? That was his madness. The fellow started medicine in 1972, but he never stopped growing, either in the hospital or subsequently at Tung Ling Seminary, learning in depth theology. That is the kind of perpetual wonder that I wish all men and women possessed. I did not feel merely inspired on the final page, I was changed. As if a blueprint to stick with it, to remain hopeful, and not give up had been given into my hands, no matter how far behind we get.
From Stethoscope to Wisdom is another piece of Dr. Andrew C. S. Koh's more recent hustle and bustle to give inspiration to readers again.
It's more detailed description and narrating of life events that readers can have almost photographic memory even with the help of little visuals only. Some details like locations, phenomenal events, certain songs and singers, contribute in imagining the best possible picture of Dr. Koh's era.
Each chapter has poems like a summary or highlights the important events. It mentions numerous endeavors of Dr. Koh since young and vibrant years, be it in the community, for internship, military, both in homeland and overseas. Simultaneous with church activities most especially at present in still tireless retirement.
It's always books to look forward from Dr. Koh. They are exemplar of success with God in manifesting, working on and celebrating, aside from having a significant topic in religion. It mirrors a religious and humble person. It teaches to make use or spend youth in dynamic activities for good health, for mankind in different purposes, and safeguard later in life. The visuals are valuable assets and an edge on this genre. The sequencing of events in the narrative are well-thought-out. It is a well written memoir. I give a justifiable five-star rate for the remarks above-mentioned. There is nothing to dislike in this book, only very much appreciation.
I proudly recommend to all readers. Wisdom it is, putting a stress on it. Hence, it's a must-read.
After reading this book, I feel like I truly know Dr. Andrew. If I were to meet him now, I would be able to understand him with great ease. I also grasp what drives and inspires him, and I have learned a lot from him.
As I immersed myself in his story, I experienced moments of laughter, such as his first day of school, as well as moments of sadness, like when a fellow student chose to end his life. I found it fascinating to visualize how the romance that later blossomed into a happy marriage for him began. While the book doesn’t focus extensively on Dr. Andrew’s children, from the few references included, it’s clear they have inherited so much from Dad.
I took this book because I have read Dr. Andrew CS Koh before. Often, his writing has always pulled me in, clear and accessible. His message about the Bible has always uplifted me, teaching more about man and his relationship with his Maker.
I took this book because I love memoirs. Often, they’d immerse into one’s life, revealing the village that raised the author, and most of them would inspire, challenging one to pay closer attention to the essence of life.
And "From Stethoscope to Wisdom: A Doctor’s Reflection" served me well. It provided me with a lens through which to view the past and to understand the lives of people in different parts of the world. It prompted me to ask myself, “If a successful cardiologist acknowledges that his achievements are not solely due to hard work but also to God’s love for humanity, who am I to doubt God’s role in my life?”
