Rate this book
The God Who Hagar’s Story is book #11 in the Extraordinary Women of the Bible historical fiction series.

Alone and feeling unseen by anyone who cares, Hagar is forced out of her Egyptian home and enslaved by the nomadic Israelites. Taken under Sarai’s wing as her maidservant, Hagar is surprised that she is treated kindly, even almost as a daughter. As the years go by, she begins to adjust to her place in this new world. That is, until everything changes again.

The day Sarai chooses Hagar to bear her husband’s firstborn son becomes both a blessing and a curse. Jealousy and anger twist Sarai’s affection once Hagar is pregnant with Abram’s child. When Sarai attacks her, Hagar flees into the desert, frightened and friendless. But when a messenger of the Lord appears, will Hagar finally come to realize that the Lord has always seen and loved her?

I think Melanie Dobson had a very hard story to write, with little, actual information available, and did an excellent job. She gave a portrait of Hagar that I never thought of because I had a much higher opinion of Abraham and Sarah, but since Hagar was protected by God, I agree with her opinion. I needed to be reminded that Abraham and Sarah were human and made mistakes too.

Love, God's Love, is beautiful

I truly enjoyed this author's fictional account of Hagar. I've always sympathized with the woman who was given no choice in her role with Sarah and Abraham. I found it difficult to sympathize with Sarah. Because my heart was broken by her in what she did to Hagar not just twice but for years.

I love the hopefulness that the author instilled into Hagar because it gave her strength that I never saw before in her. Her entire life, it appears, was always controlled by other people. I love the fact that she was seen by God and saw God and chose to serve and worship God despite the many hardships she had endured in the years she had endured them.

I like that the author chose to give this faith-filled and hopeful woman, peace and a happy ending. I believe you will enjoy this story of Hagar's life as much as I did.

This book walks through Hagar’s painful, complicated journey—her mistreatment, her escape into the desert, and the heavy mix of fear and loneliness she carries with her.

The heart of it is that moment at the spring, where God meets her personally, calls her by name, and shows her she’s not forgotten. The author really highlights how everything shifts when she realizes she’s seen by the One who never overlooks the hurting.

A gentle, hope-filled read that brings fresh compassion to a story often passed over.

The Princess, Slave, Mother, and Wife: Hagar

I have just completed book 11 in this series with one left. I now have a whole new perspective regarding Hagar. I hold her in much higher esteem. She lacked the love she needed from those she trusted as family, yet she held on to her faith in the God Who saw her, and she saw Him. She made the best of her circumstances regardless of what they were. She is a role model.

What a joy!

I never really knew the story of Hagar, other than she was Sarah’s handmaiden, and, later the mother of Abraham’s first son, Ishmael.
I really loved the way that her story was expanded on, and made into a wonderful book! Thank you Melody Dobson for writing this story, it was a real joy reading!
