Once again, Ian Kharitonov blurs the line between history and fiction so smoothly that I’d have to do my own research to locate the boundaries. A more than worthy successor to his extraordinary debut novel, ‘The Russian Renaissance.’ More action, more political intrigue, and a grittier narrative than he gave us the first time around. This author just keeps on getting better.

The second novel in Ian Kharitonov's Sokolov Saga, THE COLLABORATOR, picks up where THE RUSSIAN RENAISSANCE left off. It starts with an attack on EMERCOM headquarters by a mysterious Jihadist and rapidly escalates with a second attack on a restaurant in short order. The Cossack protagonists from the first novel, brothers Eugene and Constantine Sokolov, are rapidly embroiled in yet another conspiracy that has its origins in the birth of the Soviet Union and its reign of terror.

In THE COLLABORATOR, Kharitonov has created another novel with high sheer readability. His knowledge of Russian, Soviet, and Cossack history is mastery level, and serves to educate the reader while simultaneously entertaining them. The action scenes are also entertaining and keep the reader turning the page. Additionally, Kharitonov has a solid grasp of character writing and does a good job of providing incentive for the reader to invest in and root for the Sokolovs and their compatriots.

I do feel the story could have benefitted with more focus on the Sokolovs uncovering more of their family history (I'm being intentionally vague to avoid spoilers) but I also understand why Kharitonov made the decisions he did. That said, I do feel some other scenes in general were a bit rushed and could have been a bit more rounded.

But, these nitpicks aren't enough to keep me from recommending THE COLLABORATOR to fans of action adventure and looking to learn about Russian history while being entertained.

A page turner with interesting geographical setting and political approach

Much like the first of the series, this is an exciting, gripping tale. I really like the value placed on Russia and its people, while criticism of some of its state organs is free-flowing. The excess detail on both weaponry and martial art moves still irritates me, but less than was so with first book.

Fast moving and historical Russian novel

A great beach read and interesting to those of us that enjoy a dose of Russian history (I have not fact checked many details). I like a book with a nice tight ending.

That was fast.

This book was kind-of heartbreaking, you know.

All the bloodshed. The sacrifice. My heart broke for Constantine & then it broke for the both of them when their family history came to light.

It is sad. Uhhhh...I was hoping they get to kill Frolov in this book🙄
