Cloud Atlas is an incredible book. When I first heard about it, I didn't know what to expect because David Mitchell was being hailed as a genius. What does that mean today? I wasn't sure so thought I'd give it a shot. The book is one of the most unusual I've ever read. There are six stories of unforgettable characters, i.e. the musician who manipulates his way into the life of a syphilitic composer; a publisher who suffers a stroke only to fight his way back to health. The others are just as bizarre and interesting. I definitely enjoyed it and believe David Mitchell is one of the most talented and gifted writers of our age. And there is no doubt he is a genus.
David Mitchell presents a world wind around the book, Cloud Atlas. The book is more fascinating in the fact that it shifts the point of view more than twice but four times. Each time explaining the experiences and hardship behind each time line and bringing characters to life. When the book first starts you imagine the scenery immediately and the imagery is more than clear. But that's not all, Mitchell's Cloud Atlas makes you believe that the characters are living with you. That the people whom are living the lives are your next door neighbor.
The first point of view is extremely difficult to get through. Honestly, I almost stopped reading during it. I'm glad I just kept going because the rest of the book is definitely worth the read.
Good, confusing at first as an audiobook but started to understand layout about a quarter of the way into the book. Was glad I hung in there. Still thinking about the characters even now.
