Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler–or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps–literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. He hopes the lessons learned on the court, field, or arena and the champion sprinter pace of his books can motivate kids to become better athletes and lifelong readers.
Ethan is excited to find out if his dad's hunting trip was a success. He loves to hear the stories of his dad and his dad's friends trips. He hopes to learn to hunt and join his dad one day. When Ethan learns to hunt, takes his classes, and violates the Hunter's Code to only hunt what they will eat, not for sport, his dad is very disappointed. Ethan fears he has lost the chance to go up to the cabin with his father. One day his dad tells him they are going. Ethan is disappointed to see that someone is hunting for sport. Afte the DNR tell them the culprits were found, Dad shows Ethan how proud he was for the way Ethan handled the disrespect of the deer and the Hunter's Code.
Jake Maddox books allow students to not only read about sports they may play or want to play, they allow all levels of readers to find books for them. These books have more white space on the page, larger font, and illustrations that directly support the text. There are also likely to have backmatter about the sport. Many that were written more than a decade ago mention Facthound, which no longer exists. This does not make the books less valuable. I have many students in my elementary schools who love these books.
it was a really good book. it was about a boy named ethan and hes always wanted to go with his dad on his dads hunting trips each year but he is to young to go yet. So his dad gets him a beebee gun to practice at targets and thats the only thing that ethan wants to do. But one day ethan thought that he should try to shoot a squirrel and he hits it so his dad got home and was mad at ethan because he broke the hunters code. Ethan learned his lesson so his dad takes him on his next hunting trip
i think it was a good book its about a boy who has for aslong as he knew always wanted to go on a hunting trip with his dad and everytime he had asked his dad if he can go on his camping trips/ hunting trips his dad would say "when your old enough and then one day his dad brung him a gun it was a air pressure type gun and he told the boy (ethan) that the gun is not a toy and that it could seriously hurt someone and then gave him the then he taught his son the hunters code which was to always respect an animal and never kill a baby animal and to not kill for sport and he said all hunters follow this code or most do
(2009) Intermediate Realistic Fiction about a young boy deer hunting with his dad. For as long as he can remember, Ethan has envied his dad's hunting trips. His dad has always promised to bring Ethan along when he's old enough, and finally, this year is the year! But on their hunt, Ethan discovers some dead deer left in the woods. A poacher is killing the animals for fun. Ethan knows that's against the Hunter's Code . . . after all, he broke that rule himself.
This short chapter book gives an emotional view of the boy growing up to go deer hunting. He has waited for a long time and he learns a lot about the right and wrong aspects of hunting. It includes discussion questions and writing prompts along with some nonfiction text features like a glossary. I would use these two together because the story is told from a young boy's view. It includes the bond that grows between father and son when hunting and respect for nature. Twin text to Gun Safety; nonfiction; explains terms, dangers and proper use of guns of different types. **one of a large series by Maddox about sports.
this book is about a son dad that gos hunting and his son wants to go with. But when he gets a gun of his own he doesnt follow the hunters code. (Never shoot anything unlease you are going to eat it!)And his dad takes away his gun and hides it.

The story starts off with ethan waiting on his dad to get back from one of his famous hunting trips. And his dad has quite the present for him a airsoft gun!ethan disrespects the use of the gun and it gets took from him.later on a few day later his dad takes him on a hunting and he proves himself to be able to follow the hunters code/rules. I honestly thought this book was pretty well written and i liked it.My favorite part in this story was when him and his dad went on the hunting trip and connected on a level of son and father and hunters. My least favorite part of this story was when he killed the animals for sport. I highly recommend reading this book that anyone any age could read this book and enjoy it I give this book a 5 star. I think this book needed no improvements and it displays a good characteristic.
