Patrick Weston Joyce, or P.W. Joyce, (born 1827) was an Irish historian, writer and music collector, known particularly for his research in local place names of Ireland.
A great book by a native Irish speaker who became a respected scholar of the Irish language and Irish history and culture. His explanations of how Irish has influenced English and of the use of unique Irish phrases in English are spot on and seem lost on modern Irish speakers. Of course this is precisely why he wrote the book - to preserve and prove the provenance of various Hiberno-English words and expressions. Too bad so much of that it lost on modern, self-hating Irish people.
