Issala endured years of torture as Lady Catherine's Pet. She thought she was free until the sadistic vampire returned and brutally murdered Issala's lover. Now she spends every waking moment hunting vampires in the hopes that she can find the one who so ruthlessly destroyed her life. Lorelei Renfield's family has been serving vampires for centuries. Only a few nights before her dedication ceremony to their family's cruel master, she runs from home--and into Issala's path. The tall, dark-eyed stranger promises to protect her, but Lorelei wants more than a protector, she wants true love. The peace they both long for is shattered when Issala discovers that Lorelei's blood can destroy Lady Catherine and end her own unwanted immortality. Will she take the death she's longed for or find hope in Lorelei's arms?
Hello! I'm a writer from Nebraska who enjoys fantasy of all kinds. Stories don't always seem quite as much fun without some element of magic.
I started out writing romances because that's what my best friend and I loved to read. (My other best friend and I wrote about our science teacher being an alien and hard boiled detectives.) I have a varied and exciting inner fantasy life, you might say.
My first full length novel was a fun private detective, contemporary, crazy love story. I'm working on rewrites so that I can get it out into the world. The first book I've published is an urban fantasy about a mother who doesn't know how to be a hero, but luckily she's a quick study.
I studied fiction writing at the University of Nebraska at Omaha but didn't truly appreciate the experience. Now that I've written millions of words, I think it might be fun to go back and take some more classes. (It might be fun...or it might be annoying, who knows?)
I love to read and I adore talking to people about writing and reading. And crochet!
Thank you for dropping by and thank you for reading my book. It honors me that you would spend some time in my imaginary world.
Unique read! intense, surprising and an interesting brutal vampire love story..lots of violent scenes which were well written with some very intriguing characters..this was not your typical romantic vampire storyline..a continuing series...
Well this was a different take with the Renfield family which I truly enjoyed. The only thing is I felt it could be so much more especially with the ending like there is another book forthcoming.
Blood Curse (Blood Tetralogy Book 1) by Jen Ponce Blood Curse by Jen Ponce is an intense, sometimes brutal love story. There are violent scenes that were difficult to read, but that is unsurprising for a story about vampires. I gave this compelling page turner four stars. There were minor typos that cost it a star, but the story line & quality of writing is excellent.
The battle for good against evil wasn’t clearly drawn. At times it was a choice between evil & a lesser evil.
The protagonists were fully fleshed & strong, likable women, although one was a vampire warrior named Issala. The other a young woman named Lorelei Renfield who’s family had served vampires for generations as blood servants. Issala took regular doses of silver & did not partake of blood.
The villainess, Catherine, who had killed Issala’s former lover & had a broad streak of madness is also well drawn. Catherine had a vicious, cruel streak & her nightmarish behavior will haunt me. I would not recommend this book for young readers. Her “Pet” Morganna Renfield, Lorelei’s twin sister is a character easy to dislike. Tessa, Logan’s wife was driven mad by his imprisonment of her in an attempt to cure the vampire virus with which she was infected.
The love story & love-making scenes between Issala & Lorelei were tender & sketched with a delicate, but still strongly erotic touch.
Bravo Jen Ponce! I look forward to reading your other books, especially Blood Drunk (Blood Tetralogy Book 2). I just added it to my wishlist.
I received a complimentary paperback copy of this book in a goodreads giveaway. That did not influence my opinion for this review.
Blood Curse is a fantastic vampire novel. Jen Ponce did a wonderful job explaining how vampires could exist and how some could be bitten but not become full-blood vampires, something not all vampire novels accomplish. This book has no shortage of action and sex, including some disturbing scenes involving the Lady Catherine. The characters in the story are well written, and I couldn’t help but love Issala and Lorelei and hate Catherine and Morganna. Women are the dominant characters in this book, and while not all of them are good, the women in this book are certainly strong characters who do what is within their power to take charge of their own lives. Blood Curse is full of action, love, and as Jen Ponce says, “kick ass women and oogy monsters.” I loved this book! It is one to buy for some great horror entertainment.
Jen Ponce is a great urban fantasy author with pitch perfect plot, pacing and characterisation. Her Devany Miller series is fabulous. This was definitely good but I am not a big fan of vampires and it has strong lesbian erotic elements which added a bit of a squick factor for me. No judgement on other peoples tastes however, that's just me. Somewhere around 3 - 3.5 stars.
Excellent and a very fresh spin on the mystique of vampires. I was really entranced with the story of Issala, an immortal vampire hunter and Lorelei a mortal on the run. The story is very well written. It's not what you'd expect of a typical vampire book. Read it. You'll be glad you did.
Normally I enjoy reading vampires and paranormal fictions, but this one just doesn't do it for me. It's interesting though how the vampire world in this novel is like (and different).
