The 17 papers from the September 1999 workshop discuss how user interfaces to data intensive systems can be made easier both to construct and to use. In addition to sessions on user interfaces to databases, there are also sessions focusing on novel applications, user interface development techniques, and interfaces to advanced information systems. Two invited talks, on the development of user interfaces for the Web and on visual exploration of telecommunication data sets, address issues relating to ubiquitous information access and information overload that face numerous users every day.
