Death by Numbers

Rate this book
In life we are constantly crossing paths with people we may only see once in a lifetime. Each of the paths being walked in Death by Numbers, though touched upon briefly, have some sort of effect on one another. Although each tragedy seems so separate from the one before it, could it be possible that in the end, they will come together to serve a greater purpose?

I grew up a gypsy at my parents hands. With a dad in the Air Force, I got to experience life on the road, soaking up culture. After spending 6 years working as a model, I realized that the industry wasn't much of what I was looking for in life. More often than not I felt like Jo Stockton in Funny Face and escaped into the world of film, where your job is based on something more than beauty. Though I do love 12 hour days on set, there's nothing like snuggling up with a warm laptop and letting my fingers dance away to create a whole new world.

It was different from most books, in that instead of having one main character that you follow throughout an entire book, each chapter in Death by Numbers has it's own main character and their story ends at the end of their chapter. The entire time I was reading the book, I thought I was just reading a collection of short stories about death, because the lives of each character are so seperate and in different settings, even though they may mention the death in the previous chapter....actually I think each of them mentioned the death of the previous chapter *SPOILER*(the guy with the drug lord father and uncle mentioned going to college with the guy who was killed by a shark in the chapter before it...etc.)

BUT OH NO. At the very end of the book, I find out that even though each individual chapter followed it's own storyline, it's really just been set up to put the emphasis on this little boy's life. It doesn't go into much detail about him, but definitely leaves room for a second book. Not sure if the author had this in mind, but I'm wanting to read the second one.

Side note: I got this on amazon and for some reason they have this listed as 125 pages, but it makes sense now that I've seen the goodreads page and found out it was really 185. The stories flowed well, and I was able to read it in two nights, but I'm a fast reader and the book was paced nice.

It's probably different than any book you've read lately...especially any suspense story. The setup is just alot different from most books.

Would I list it as a suspense story? Not sure...but I'm also not sure what genre it would fit into, suspense is probably the closest. It's definitely suspenseful throughout the main chapters with the death and everything, but in the very end (when it leaves you at the boy) it makes you wonder what kind of turn it will take. I guess that could be the suspense of it all.

Anyone remember this guy:

Yeah...Well, when you get done with this book, you'll get it. I mean, the VERY end of the book...Then you'll be stuck slobbering for the next book like me.
As for now, you can just call him Angello.

Three point five stars....and here's why:

PROS:
-quick read, finished it after two nights at bedtime...a book about murders at bedtime, yeah not the best choice.

-twist at the end...probably the main reason this gets a half a star, instead of that full fourth one. I really wasn't expecting to end like it did. NOTE TO READERS: each chapter isn't a short story....ok so they really are....but at the end they're really just puzzle peices.

-DEATH...lots of it....I knew going into it that there were goin to be ten different deaths...hence the title "death by numbers."

CONS:
-not enough character depth...i was left wondering about some of the lives of the characters. Kinda sucks they were killed off so soon. Then again I guess it was the author's point not to have people attach to them, it's not really even about them in the end.

-DEATH...lots of it... there were some upbeat moments, but be prepared for people getting killed...and people having crappy pasts....and beautiful women. there were lots of those.

All i can say, is just read this sucker.

I'll be honest...I was skeptical about buying this book.

I was searching through Kindle books and found this one. Why did I decide to buy a book...on a kindle... that was 4.99 for an author I'd never heard of? Cause sometimes people are dumb. But what could've been a waste of money, was pretty worth it. I would've paid more honestly....alright maybe not for a kindle copy, but would've bought the paperback...if it was available?

My main worry, (other than throwing money into the poo pile) was that even the description said that it was about ten different breif paths. i was worried I wouldn't connect, but somehow C.B. made it work. I probably would've felt more disconnected if the book hadn't ended in the way it did. If it would've ended with just the death chapters I would've been annoyed. It didn't though. What you don't realize when buying this book is that they are connected but in a weird way. Wish it didn't end on a cliff hanger...but now I'm waiting on the next one.

Easy read that keeps your attention. Good for a spring break day where you have nothing but time to kill.

Ok so, I've literally just finished reading Death by Numbers, which I've won from good reads. I entered the contest because I was intrigued by the description. The story is broken down into a series of short stories, all ending in death (duh) my favorite character was Janie because she was strong willed and wasn't afraid to stand up for herself, which more girls should do. Some of the stories do get a little predictable, and maybe a tad dull. I'll admit I did skim through some of it, however the ending is what saved it for me. The ending is why I rated this a 3 and not a 1.
