Limousine driver Micah Donovan prides himself on his discretion. Regardless of what transpires in
the back of his car every night, he keeps his eyes on the road and his heart so far away that he can no longer reach it.
But something's different tonight in Las Vegas. The driver's wealthy client, Austin Savlodar, is the malicious son of an imprisoned gangster. During their journey through the neon streets, Micah overhears Savlodar forcing himself upon a woman in the back of the car. Reminding himself that it's none of his business, Micah delivers them to their destination.
But when Savlodar requests another young beauty be delivered to his door, Micah is unable to turn a
deaf ear, and he rescues Katelyn just before Savlodar can hurt her. Together they flee into the night, with Savlodar's enforcer pursuing them.
Micah's carefully crafted life, so far free of impediment and incident, breaks apart in his hands. He has only Katelyn to keep him standing -- a woman he hardly knows yet is unable to resist. The two of them have little choice but to run to stay alive.

Lance Hawvermale’s Discretionist is a well-paced thriller set in Las Vegas. Micah, an obsessive and meticulous limo driver whose specialty is discretion seems to live by the rule that what happens in the limo stays in the limo. But everything changes when he delivers client Katelyn to the malicious Austin Savlodar, spoiled son of an imprisoned mobster.
Hawvermale’s characters are well developed and believable. Micah begins as an almost unlikeable soul, the emotionally distance son of an invalid cop. We see glimpses of his humanity peek through his cool, professional shell, first with Tully, his father’s ex-partner and later with the lovely blue-eyed Katelyn, whose vitally is irresistible. But as Micah succumbs to the vivacious Katelyn, Savlodar’s coldblooded henchman Nirat relentlessly pursues them, forcing Micah and Katelyn to run for their lives.
Hawvermale’s writing style, like his limo driver, Micah, is very tightly controlled and tense. Reading this book you know who controls that action at every turn, you just don’t know which turn he will take. I enjoyed this book enough to check out Hawvermale’s other work. Pick up a copy and enjoy.
Lance's book, The Discretionist, is not my normal genre for casual reading material, and because of this it took me a while to get started. Once I was properly into the book however I very much wanted to keep reading.
The story plays out with about 80% predictability. This is not a bad thing however as it means the characters embedded within are following normal expected parameters rather than arbitrary actions simply for the sake of a storyline. And that 20% delivers enough twists and turns to the story to keep things alive and flowing and above all else - enjoyable.
I thank Lance for a good read, that kept me wanting to read more (once I finally got into the book!). A solid 4*s.
LOVED this book. This author definitely has a flair. His characters are believable and funny. He adds just the right amount of mystery and moves the story along by conversation between characters. I've now read three of his books and can't wait to start another one.
