I've read and gifted Susie's wonderfully insightful devotional for adults (LIGHTHEARTED), so I shouldn't have been surprised that she has written such a meaningful children's book as well. As a picture book author myself, I know what a challenge it is to appeal to both children and adults in equal measure. Susie has done that here, brilliantly! Children will relate to Cobie, sheep #100, and all of his big feelings. They will also love searching for their favorite sheep from page to page, as all 100 sheep are uniquely drawn. The story is captivating, too,! Adults will especially appreciate a fun approach to teaching skip counting--counting by twos, fours, fives, etc., that is woven into the story. Adults and children will both love the kind Shep, who cares for all of his flock, from 1 to 100!

The back matter has a helpful counting chart and "Counting Challenge," and, drawing from her expertise in writing devotional pieces, Susie has included a thoughtful "Talk about It" section with questions geared at helping children through some of those big feelings that kids experience from time to time.

Cobie stole my heart!

Cobie is one of the most endearing characters I've come across in a children's book. This sweet little sheep is always last and feels like he doesn’t matter. Then when he gets lost, he discovers he was never forgotten. As the story unfolds, the readers feel Cobie’s struggle, because most of us have felt overlooked at times.

The illustrations are colorful, engaging, and full of personality. My eyes lingered on each spread longer than I expected. I loved how the sheep all looked different. Each one unique.

What I love most is how the book teaches skip-counting while never losing sight of the real lesson underneath it. The counting isn't just a math exercise; it becomes a fun adventure, following Shep as he searches, page by page, for the one sheep who matters just as much as the other 99.

This beautiful retelling of the parable in Matthew 18 shows children that no one is forgotten. The Shepherd's love is big enough to go looking for the one who's lost. Kids will love this!

The learning materials in the back are a wonderful bonus. I didn’t expect this. What a treasure! They help children connect the story to who Jesus is as the Good Shepherd.

Where Is Sheep 100? is the rare kind of book that teaches a skill and plants an eternal truth at the same time. Children will want to read it again and again—and the grown-ups will enjoy it too!

Highly recommended.

Five Stars But Not For Everyone

I only recommend this book to those who enjoy reading aloud to little ones and want a book that offers fun learning activities, cute illustrations, and a story that points to the heart of our Good Shepherd.

In addition to story-form skip-counting practice, I love that the book offers a fun little bonus. The illustrator gave each of the 100 sheep distinguishing features, using various hairdos, hats, and other accessories. After the first reading, it's fun to start over and go on a quest for the sheep with the black beret or the one with the blue sunglasses or the spiky mohawk.

(Be warned, this is the kind of book kids are likely to want to read over and over and over again--you know the type).
