This book consists of a number of philosophical arguments about metaphysics, epistemology, social and political philosophy, aesthetics, Eastern philosophy, and the meaning of life that I find interesting and that I think that some other people may find interesting.
It's hard to find balance. Comprehensive overviews of whole art sectors are either too bland or a little vexing. But this book is a fine exception. It's an elegant skirt across a range of stand-out schools of philosophy, from Plato to John Locke to Yoga. A few pages on each, no more. It's an effortless and uplifting ride. All good teachers live here. There's enough foundation block meat to get your teeth into and to whet the appetite for more
It reminds me of Christian Jarrett's "30 Second Psychology" in its reference tool qualities and its ability to do a "for beginners" aide without presuming you're a half-wit. Derren Brown's "Happy" in short-hand. Go, think on it.
