Detective Rebecca Foxx and Special Agent Jordan Gray are back in the next installment of the Gray Foxx Files. It’s been months since they caught the Cradle Killer and things have finally started to settle down, allowing them to focus on their lives and relationship; but the break is short-lived, and nothing could have prepared them for the hell that’s about to get unleashed.

When a frantic call summons Jordan to her old church, she isn’t sure what to expect; but the panic in the priest’s voice raises her suspicions and she asks Rebecca to join her. When the two women discover the slain body of a well-known Senator with strong mob ties, it sends them on a hunt for a sadistic killer intent on revenge and punishment.

From sacrificial rites to biblical subtexts, the search is on for the murderer before he can kill again. As the list of bodies grows, Rebecca is determined to pin it on an old enemy, against Jordan’s better judgment. When the evidence continues to mount, she realizes she will have to stop her witch hunt against Chicago’s most hated mob boss and listen to her gut. The only question is - can Rebecca’s instincts lead her to the killer before he strikes again?

About the author

Syd Parker was born in 1975 in California and now lives in Indiana with her partner. Syd loves to reminisce about growing up the oldest of seven kids. There were plenty of shenanigans with that many kids, many of which have ended up in Syd's novels. In school, Syd loved all things English, but put dreams of writing aside to concentrate on her studies. She set off for college with the goal of being a nurse, but ultimately opted for a much more sexy and debonair day job in financing. Not picking up a pen again until she was thirty-four, Syd hit the ground running, penning six novels in three years. She has finally realized her lifelong dream of being an author and telling her stories to the masses.

Having long realized her dream of playing pro golf will probably not happen with a wicked slice, Syd spends her free time three-putting on the golf course, riding her road bike Hammer or training to be a professional runner. The moments in between are sprinkled with a gaggle of nieces and nephews that she adores and spoils all the time. She fancies herself a down home gourmet chef and has an unnatural addiction to Doritos. She loves to read a good love story and thoroughly enjoys writing them as well. "It isn't just about writing a story, it's about creating a world and having the reader climb into it, experiencing it in first person. That's my goal...that's why I write." I really like the team of Rebecca Fox and Jorday Gray and the cooperation between the Police Department and the FBI. This is the second book in the Grey Foxx mystery series.

The case they have to solve is a gruesome murder of a public person, and envolved old enemies are making the case even more challenging. I loved to follow the team and vitness their efforts, their thinking, the sysyphus work that goes into reading a case. Especially with a twist like this in the end. Great mystery.

And beside the policework, I really like how the relationship evolves between Rebecca and Jordan.

As the book ends with a part of a cliffhanger, I really hope we will get more Foxx and Gray.

This is the third review I have attempted to write for this novel, and here's why: Awful hateful characters; poor obvious murderer; wavering undecided genre.

Let me discuss the characters at this point, or rather the two main characters, as they are to blame for my earlier statement.

Rebecca Foxx is a beautiful(?) detective who seems to have some form of seniority in the police force. She has changed from the first book: horrible is the only word to describe her, she strays so often to the other side of the law for, well, reasons. The reason she hates the book's main 'baddy' is that he is suspected to have killed her officers. Fair enough right? Except the author gives no emotional weight to it at all and then proceeds to use this as an excuse to have Foxx running around tearing her and everyone elses hair out: she lies, commits battery, trespasses, damages property, and is generally a hateful bitch.

Jordan Gray is the play girl from the original books, now in a relationship with Foxx. In the first book I felt as though she would be the wildcard, the hardballer of the duo, always just scratching at what was legal and what was not. Nope she's just sorta boring sadly. She spends all the book wandering around after the nutter (Foxx) whining about, well, everything: her relationship, her job, the baddy, the goodies, EVERYTHING. So she gets a bit tiresome, the combination of that and the fact I just want her to slap Foxx silly (might help?) just renders her just meh.

The murderer is soooo obvious and that's one of the problems, the author sets up these puzzles but they are not puzzling, and so when you spend a few hours reading about how Foxx and Gray have solved absolutely NOTHING you question their intelligence.

The genre seems to want to be both lesbian romance and crime solving, not mutually exclusive you would think, but here the author is, like, they are together now, get over it and they are too bloody stupid to have any hope of being interesting crime solvers.

There you have it: psychotic stupid angry cop leads boring stupid sullen cop on a rampage across the city, leading to frustrated and crime lords garnering their sympathy. It may be your thing, just expect 0 thinking, lots of bull headed ' investigating', a forgotten romance subplot and thorough hair tearing, oh and flashing eyes, lots and lots of 'flashing' eyes.

Foxx and Gray are back! and again it is a real page turner!
It's nice to see how their relation is evolving. And just like the first book, I couldnt stop reading.
It's not a story filled with a lot of action, but it definitely keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next.
In short a very good mystery with some unexpected twists.
I feel another coming up.. And I would definitely buy it!

I really enjoyed it, as with all her books, I couldn't put it down. The story was great and the characters kept me on edge, wasn't sure if I wanted to smack them on the head or embrace them
