Sloane Parrish has been married for 10 regrettable years now. If she wasn’t in such a rush to escape her home life at 18, maybe she wouldn’t have married the first man to show her an iota of kindness. However, that kindness did not last long. After the wedding—during the honeymoon—her husband, James, immediately changed. He wanted babies, cooked meals, and a subservient housewife, not the court stenographer who worked 9–5 every day and couldn’t bear the thought of bringing children into a situation even remotely close to her own childhood. After a certain point of ignoring his wishes, James abruptly stops bothering her. He visits his parents more often; he’s eating dinner with them and helping them around the house, only to spend the night there. Or he’s spending the day with their close friend Kelly and her 4-year-old son Adam, who they happen to be godparents to. It doesn’t seem alarming; he loves spending time with his godson; it fills the childless void in his own life. And Kelly’s husband doesn’t mind it either, being out of the state most days for work. Erik Hawthorne likes the fact that his son is growing up around people who love him so dearly. Everything changes when Sloane comes home early to see Kelly’s minivan in the driveway. She rushes inside, expecting to get a big hug from Adam and spend some quality time gossiping with her long-time friend. Instead, what she finds changes her life forever.
Let me tell you a little story… about this story. 📖✨
I first discovered this book through a local Facebook group—turns out the author is local to me, too! As soon as I saw it was a romance, I knew I had to add it to my TBR. 💕 Fast forward a bit, and I spotted a Kindle promo offering it for free—score! So of course, I grabbed it.
Now that I’ve finally read it? No regrets. It absolutely delivered.
Sloane and James were married. Erik and Kelly were married. But somewhere along the way… things got interesting. 👀 What started as spite sex turned into something deeper, more delicious, and emotionally tangled in all the best ways.
If you’re into a bit of suspense, a good dose of spice 🌶️, and—bonus!—no third-act breakup drama, this one's definitely worth the read. I was hooked from the first page.
“I’ve wished that our forevers are the exact same length. I can’t imagine a day without you. I can’t imagine leaving you alone in the world, either. I think you’re my soulmate”
This book was honestly SO amazing! Sloane and Erik were seriously the perfect example of soulmates and meant to be 😍 There’s so much I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to give anything away 🤐 🖤 At first it seemed that everything was flowing quickly, but it weaved together so perfectly 💜 As a 38 year old who is still obsessed with Fall Out Boy, the mention of my favorite album of theirs was enough for me to give this book 5 stars lol. Surprisingly there was some mystery and action in this book also, which had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and screaming at the book lol Please read this book, I promise, you will laugh, gasp, swoon, and quite possibly have to change your undies 💦 🔥 🔥 This author is now a definite insta read for me 🖤
One of the best communication and healthy relationships I’ve read in a book. When it came to being with eachother, Sloane and Erik really took everything into consideration when wanting to develop their relationships. It was very refreshing to read about.
I had the amazing opportunity to format this book for May, and I just have to say I am so thankful she found me, because I absolutely LOVED this story!
Full disclosure, I don’t normally read books I format all the way through. I’ll scan and make sure that everything looks okay in the epub but I found myself sitting and reading every single word May wrote.
I loved the mix of the life in a career in law, FBI work, and mystery/suspense thrown in with the romance. I’m a BIG romantic suspense reader and this was up there with some of the best. Your research (or life experiences???) was explained beautifully and I have no notes!! Kelly is the WORST and needs therapy, lol! May, hope your readers love it because this book is so well written!! I couldn’t stop reading it and flew through it two sittings. Eli, PHEW, that man made me take a cold shower and some points, and Sloan was adorable and deserved every bit of love she gained in this book!
I can’t wait for my next May Clarke book!!
**May did not ask me to review, I am doing this because this book deserves to be read and loved by the amazing romance reader community!**
I had the privilege of reading this early, and I truly have no words. May you are amazing. This work of art is so beautifully written and made me feel every emotion in the book. The smut was incredible, but the characters chemistry was even better. The love these two share is something I can only dream about. I cannot wait to read more of your work ❤️
(ARC) Im like a Lawyer is a lovely story written in 3rd person by May Clarke. Our strong FMC Sloane comes unexpectedly leaves work early and comes home to find her husband of ten years is cheating on her with her best friend Kelly who is married to Erik. Sloane and Erik’s romance is nicely built as they navigate the new stage of life they are in. The chemistry between the pair was on fire. Im like a Lawyer was a nice and refreshing read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Im like a Lawyer is now available!
Congratulations May and thank you so much for the ARC!
✨If you love a thriller and you love a romance and you, like me have thought it would be amazing to have them combined.. well you’re in luck. If Frieda McFadden and Tessa Bailey had a book baby, it would be this book. I absolutely devoured this read (less than 12 hours). From the start I was HOOKED and just whe you think “what now” you’re hit with a twist. This book was such a fun read and I highly recommend it! Did I mention it totally has criminal minds vibes?! ✨
5⭐️ Sloane and Erik are the definition of a healthy relationship: full of communication and respect for each other. I loved this book! The pages kept flying, I didn’t want to put it down. I highly recommend reading.
A gripping, emotionally charged exploration of betrayal, self-worth, and rediscovery.
I’m Like A Lawyer by May Clarke is a raw, deeply human portrait of a woman reclaiming her power after years of emotional suffocation. What begins as a story of a tired marriage quickly unfolds into a tense domestic drama that asks urgent questions about trust, independence, and the quiet courage it takes to start over.
Sloane Parrish is one of the most relatable protagonists I’ve read in recent women’s fiction intelligent, exhausted, and aching for a life that feels like her own. Her decade-long marriage to James is marked by the kind of silent erosion that so many women endure: small sacrifices, shrinking freedoms, and dreams deferred. Clarke captures this reality with unflinching honesty and razor-sharp emotional insight.
When Sloane uncovers the devastating truth about her husband’s betrayal, the story pivots from despair to defiance. What follows isn’t just the aftermath of infidelity it’s a testament to survival, self-discovery, and the liberation that comes from refusing to stay small. Clarke’s writing is taut yet lyrical, blending emotional depth with suspenseful pacing that keeps you glued until the very last page.
Echoing the psychological realism of Gone Girl and the emotional nuance of It Ends With Us, I’m Like A Lawyer challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about love, loyalty, and the boundaries of forgiveness. It’s powerful, unsettling, and ultimately empowering a modern drama that lingers long after the story ends.
I had the incredible honor of being a beta reader for this book. While I'm not 100% sure if it's okay for me to write this review, I'm going to do it anyways.
I'm Like A Lawyer is an engaging story that features a strong FMC named Sloane and the most golden retriever MMC Erick. Their love story is built off of mutual healing after their respective spouses were caught cheating with...each other (did that make sense?).
May has done a wonderful job of using 3rd Person POV allowing the reader see and experience each characters emotions and thoughts all at once.
There are twists, turns, but ultimately, the main focus is ensuring the best possible outcome of "AITA if I sleep with my best friends husband, after I caught her sleeping with my husband?"
In this case??? No, Sloane, you are not the asshole.
This is a good story. A 3 star rating only because of the, at times, explicit sex scenes, which are not as all encompassing in the book as some erotica, but still rates a warning. #1529.
