GET SPAINED - A comedy memoir from the author of the bestselling novel Lock, Stock and Two Smoking PaellasMark and Abbie – the Bonnie and Clyde of Spanish home improvement had now been living in their Spanish dream home for a couple of years. Every day admiring their home as if it’s a fortress amongst the olive groves.

Last year, Abbie, determined to grow her own spuds, had brought her new, precious plants indoors to shield them from the cold that had suddenly hit their humble home. Mark’s job? Simple. Keep the door shut. But did he? Oh no, instead the cats transformed them into a feline five-star litter box.

Now, with the warmer weather, undeterred, she decided it was time to resurrect her potato-growing ambitions with no more feline sabotage.

But as usual life threw curve balls and not everyone survived the chaos. And there, in the midst of it all, a new addition arrived, and this time it’s big and it’s ugly.

“To dreams” they toast, where the mincer hums, fingers occasionally vanish and may the cats find a new litter box.

This book made me laugh out loud! With the anecdotes pertinent to living in the country (I.e. scat, and animal tracks and genitalia) it reminded me of our move from a larger urban area to a more rural way of life. Like the thunderstorms we get that clear the air and bring down the gawd awful temperatures.

Or looking at tracks and scat to try and figure out which animals are in the area.

It also read a little like a cozy mystery with her recipes interspersed in the narrative. Her “stream of consciousness” method of stringing seemingly unrelated topics together was reminiscent of James Joyce.

From Spain with Love is a very witty book with some cracking one liners which definitely hit the chuckle muscle. Each chapter is like an individual little story.

Shelia is one of my favourite characters but what happens with her and a mincer and also a day out at the water park. I enjoyed the stories of visitors to the property especially Tim and Tom who meet some what they think are unlikely characters.

In this book we are introduced to Trevor but who is he? and why is he described as a Land Rover?

The book offers off grid living in Spain to culinary delights with recipes to accompany them. This adds something very different to this book. Chapters include family and friendships, pets, scenery, traditions, weather, local history including a small island called Tabarca and critters.

A lighthearted page turner for anyone to read. I loved it
