I expected a supernatural memoir. What Perched on the Rooftop delivered was an emotionally charged story of faith, fear, resilience, and generational love in the face of something unexplainable.
From the opening storm scene - the adobe walls shaking under flying debris, Eva’s desperate prayers rising above the roaring wind, the sense of something unseen circling the edge of the storm pulls you into the family’s terror.
The chapters detailing Aunt Minda’s mysterious illness are especially harrowing. The transformation from a cheerful young woman into someone seized by fear, hallucinations, and an unnameable darkness is terrifying. The whispers in the night, the escalating dread, and the horrifying discovery of the horn wrapped in red thread … omg.
And yet, there is tenderness amidst the terror — Mita’s fierce love, the children trying to make sense of the chaos, and the narrator’s profound, maternal bond. The dream sequences with the mother bring a spiritual depth that balances the darker supernatural elements.
Don Tibet’s involvement adds a compelling layer, illustrating how communities facing the unexplainable draw on ancient wisdom, ritual, and faith to survive. His warnings, trances, and revelations ground the story in a reality beyond Western explanations.
By the end, I was struck by the resilience of this family. The story comes full circle with a message of healing and survival, especially in Aunt Minda’s later life. It’s a reminder that while trauma can leave shadows, love can outshine them. Perched on the Rooftop is an unforgettable read. It’s chilling, hell yes - but it’s also about the strength of a family bound by love.

Wonderful story of colorful life in rural Honduras, through the eyes of bright observant boy! Lovely writing and very descriptive!
