«Med beina på nakken» is a book about a guy in a wheelchair called Eirik. Or “Johnny”, as his father keeps insisting on calling him ever since they arrived in Berlin with only the cash in their pockets.
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what’s happening with Eirik and his father within the first couple of pages, even if it isn’t said directly. They are in this crappy apartment which they paid for in cash, the curtains are closed off. There is obviously something shady going on, and when you’re inside off Eirik’s head it’s pretty clear that his father took off with him. Not that Eirik seems to mind.
Eirik is a difficult character to describe. Not because he is particularly complex or anything like that, but because there isn’t really that much to say about him. He is in a wheelchair, that I already said. I’m not sure about his age, but I would guess that he was eight if I’d just go by his maturity.
A possibly-eight year-old boy being the narrator is something I wouldn’t typically recommend. Making a dramatic story from the perspective of someone who doesn’t really take things seriously and only wants to play football makes the story really tame, and “tame” isn’t what you’d expect when reading about a father kidnapping his son.
There didn’t happen that much, either. They’re basically just living the Berlin life, even though it is a not-luxurious one. Eirik plays a little football with the neighbor kids, eats a lot of ice cream, paints the apartment walls. “Yay”.
Svingen skriver godt, fantastisk godt!
