I didnโ€™t choose this life. They chose it for me.

For two decades, a cycle of suffering trapped us. Our lives, like a tangled web, were bound together by one tragedy after another, each one tightening the knot of our collective yet separate misery. Neither of us aware of the otherโ€™s pain and suffering until his hunt for his missing sister brings us together.

They took everything from me. Now, I will rain vengeance upon them.

After years of searching for the people who robbed me of everything I knew and loved, Iโ€™ve become a cold, hard, unfeeling man. That is until I catch sight of a boy who makes me question the mission Iโ€™ve been on for twenty years.

I have absolutely been obsessing over the Societas' stories, and Tavish has been one of my favorite side characters from all of the stories. His behavior, his brattiness, his snack choices, everything about him drew me in, and I was SO excited to be able to read his story!

The life that Tavish has been led to live is undeniably heartbreaking. Everything this poor soul has had to endure, ugh, my heart is just shattered. But thanks to Everlyโ€™s men, he's here today, and his story is remarkable.

Draven ohhhhh man. That accent is everything in itself, lol. But Draven has also had a hard hand dealt to him as well, which caused him to put up a thick exterior wall and doesn't want to let his emotions show. But when he and Tavish cross paths, everything changes, and it's beautiful!

I am obsessed with the two of them! Buuuuuttttt this cliffy....I can NOT handle this, I need more NOOOOW!!!

Dark, gritty, and twisted

Draven and Tavish are deeply entwined in the dark world of human trafficking.
Both have very personal reasons for wanting to dismantle a trafficking ring.
Draven has lost people, and Tavish has suffered deeply at the hands of these nefarious people.
Draven initially tries to keep Tavish at arms length in order to protect himself from further harm and to keep Tavish safe as well from protection as retaliation against him.
He had no defense against Tavish and his sunshine demeanor.
These two were off the charts steamy.
There's lots of fast-paced action, danger, and drama.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm desperately waiting for the conclusion.

At this point in my life, if Sara writes it, I will read it. And I am never disappointed. I think this is my favourite book Sara has put out to date. The angst, the secrets, the revelations and the spice ๐Ÿฅต I was not ready! In fact I still donโ€™t think Iโ€™m ready and Iโ€™ve finished the bloody thing. This book was a suspenseful rollercoaster from start to finish, to manage that all in less than 250 pages blew my mind a little bit.

Just read this, I promise you it is worth your time!

Draven is a Scottish, Viking of a man, the story starts off 10 years in the past, when he learns about why his family died and he learns about the Order of Death. He then decides he wants to avenge them. Then we have Tavish, whose father is part of the Order, when his dad dies when heโ€™s 16, he gets trapped in their world. He sees Draven and becomes obsessed, and decides to help the guy virtually. Okay, I like to start off with good things before diving into my dislikes and issues. The good things? Tavish is sweet and sassy. Draven has a beautiful soul who just wants to rid the world of the evil of the Order and avenge his family. It has a great premise and lots of potential. Now the things I disliked. First off, this bookโ€™s list of kinks and trigger warnings had me pretty excited, checked a lot of my boxes but for me personally it didnโ€™t deliver. It is a slow burn. Absolutely no action til after 60%. And even when it did, they talked about kinky sex but there wasnโ€™t a lot of it going on, even once they started their dynamic. The story has this premise for this Society and Order, but the world building lacked details for me. This book has other characters from this same world but different authors and for me this didnโ€™t work because it feels like you miss some of the world building if you didnโ€™t read the previous stories. Second, this book ends on a cliffhanger. Third, there is a lot of time jumping, not just at the beginning but in later scenes/chapters. Itโ€™s missing details and leaves things too vague. In the end, this story had great potential but it fell a little flat. Draven is a sexy Viking who wants to avenge his family. Tavish is just a young man that got dealt a bad hand and is a tech genius. But there are plot holes and itโ€™s missing depth, character development and details. For me, it was okay, it wasnโ€™t bad, it just wasnโ€™t something I loved.

Breaking the Code by Sara Hurst is a love story thatโ€™s anything but binary. (see what I did there? HA!!) Prepare yourself for a wild, heart-pounding ride where secrets are decoded and hearts are hacked!

Meet Draven, the ultimate strong, silent type (YAASSS DADDY) whoโ€™s been on a mission to decrypt the mystery of his sisterโ€™s disappearance for two decades. He's a man of few words but intense emotions, and just when he thinks heโ€™s cracked the code, along comes Tavish, a brilliant and bratty tech whiz who brings all the sunshine to Dravenโ€™s stormy world.

When these two collide, itโ€™s more than just sparks that flyโ€”it's like an entire fireworks display. Tavish, with his playful antics and quick wit, starts to break down Dravenโ€™s encrypted heart. And letโ€™s be honest, their chemistry? Its off the charts.. This slow burn will not leave you disappointed.

The plot is a thrilling tangle of suspense, mystery, and passion, with a secret society thrown in for good measure. Itโ€™s a page-turner that will have you trying to decipher every clue and decode every twist. And the age gap between them? Itโ€™s like a classic case of old-school meets new-tech, where each learns to appreciate the other's unique strengths.

Sara Hurstโ€™s writing is a masterclass in keeping readers hooked, blending heart-racing action with moments that will make you laugh out loud. The witty banter and sizzling tension between Tavish and Draven is nothing short of electric, proving that sometimes, opposites donโ€™t just attractโ€”they ignite.

So, if youโ€™re ready to log into a story filled with dark romance, hidden secrets, and a love thatโ€™s worth every bit of the struggle to decode, Breaking the Code is the book for you. Just be prepared for your heartstrings to be hacked in the best possible way!
This book gets all the YES from me. Highly Recommend!

4.5 Stars - This story begins with a bit of backstory switching between dates to bring us current. It felt a little disjointed at first, but it becomes clearer ad the story unfolds and we learn about the connections and events that bring Tavish and Draven together.

Tavish is basically brought up and thrown into captivity through his father in the Order of Death, a secret society of human traffickers. His father was tasked with killing Dravenโ€™s family. Tavish makes himself more valuable by learning computers and coding, providing valuable information to his captors. This is how he learns of Draven.

Draven is on a mission to find and eliminate those responsible for taking his family away from him. He starts receiving information from someone and learns his sister may still be alive. Tavish and a few others manage to get away and a new secret society is created for the purpose of eliminating the Order of Death.

This story picked up the pace as it went along. Draven is Scottish, and his accent and brogue are prevalent throughout. It takes a little getting used to but it is charming and helps paint the picture of who Draven is. There is an age gap, but Tavish is exactly what Draven (and his late husband) had been searching for for many years. He often reminds us of this, but fights it for some time before giving in.

I was fully invested in this story about halfway through and the last half flew by. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I canโ€™t wait to jump into the next book of this duet to see how things play out. This is a new author for me, and Iโ€™ll definitely be keeping my eyes out for more from her.

This was my first read by this author and I'm so glad I stumbled across this book! I mean this quote alone had me sold.๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ:
'Breath play is my favourite, but usually it's by one of his big hands'.
Yes please! Sign me up ๐Ÿฅต.

I was not disappointed, what a delightfully kinky story this was. Tavish and Draven are just... Amazing human beings and characters that will stay with me for quite a while. I have already ordered the 2nd book and am patiently impatient when waiting for it to come out ๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธ.

๐Ÿ’ฅPlease mind your trigger warnings for this book however, it is a darker romance with some heavy topics and your mental health is important! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Tropes/kinks include:
๐Ÿ”ฅDaddy/Boy Kink (no age play)
๐Ÿ”ฅAge Gap
๐Ÿ”ฅDominance and Breath Play
๐Ÿ”ฅSecret society
๐Ÿ”ฅVigilante Justice
๐Ÿ”ฅSpanking
๐Ÿ”ฅTrauma
๐Ÿ”ฅHurt/Comfort
๐Ÿ”ฅGrumpy/sunshine
๐Ÿ”ฅSize difference

Without getting into spoilers, Tavish has been through a lot in his first 20 years of life, and he's such a strong, amazing, sunshine and rainbows MC. He knows what he wants, makes plans and goes after it, and after a chance encounter he wants Draven.
Draven, has encountered terrible loss, and had his world upended multiple times in his life, he's grumpy, closed off and dead set on vengeance. However, a twinky hacker catches his attention and brings his daddy Dom roaring to the surface and demanding attention.
The spice was superb ๐Ÿ”ฅ and if you love your daddy kink, dirty, possessive and hard this will be just the thing for you! The plot was fast paced and kept you on your toes as well. Constantly wondering what will happen next. It does end of a bit of a cliffhanger but nothing TOO crazy, plus the second book comes out on the 13th so keep an eye on that โค๏ธ
5/5 โญ's, will definitely reread and continue to keep track of future projects by this author!

โ€œBreaking the Codeโ€ by Sara Hurst was my first read by this glad it was THIS book! I was immediately sucked in with the trope listโ€ฆ I mean dark secret society romance with age gap and daddy k!nk, pleaseโ€ฆ. and the story did NOT disappoint. I was hooked from start to finishโ€ฆ but the cliffhanger? Soooo not fairโ€ฆ I need book 2 desperately ๐Ÿคฃ

I live for a secret society type of romance, the men living in the shadows. Hurst has a unique take on it and it always kept me guessing. The main society of the book, the Societas Exspiravit, was established by essentially an uprising against a well established and horrible secret society called The Order of Death. This new society is out to destroy the TOOD and this is how Tavish and Draven come to connect. They each have their own stake in TOOD and each play a part in trying to take this organization down, and resist their pull to each other to the point of snapping. Draven has major daddy vibes and when he finally gives in, Tavish is the perfect boy for him. The burn is sloooooow and the spice spices and the connection between โ€˜Dravishโ€™ is so perfect I was salivating for more from them.

There are a ton of twists and turns in this book! Itโ€™s also told in chunks of time from both POVs which i really liked! It gives us everything we need to how we landed to the present day setting. ALSO! Draven is straight up Scottish and Hurst wrote his chapters in straight up Scottish, with a glossary of terms to go with it and I was OBSESSED! It took me a minute to understand him but after a while I didnโ€™t even notice - it was just Draven! I thought the pace was good. The burn is slow here folks so keep that in mind, but I liked the connection between the two MCs - I mean Draven makes Tavish eat more than soda and candy and I loved it!

I recommend this book if you like a suspenseful, secret society, dark romance with a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers and a good boy finally connecting with his daddy. Canโ€™t wait for the second half of this duet - I have a feeling itโ€™s going to be a ROLLER coaster!

I do not think my review will do this book justice. From page one this book got me hooked and by the end of the story, you know all you need to know about Draven(one of my favourite names) and Tavish. Tavish has been in the Order since birth, Draven is after the Order since they destroyed his family.
Tavish even with everything that has happened to him, is a ray of sunshine, a computer genius which thanks to his knowledge has saved his life a number of times. But the moment he locked eyes on Draven, he knew what he wanted.
Draven is a man on a mission. Wanting revenge on the men who took his family away. Until his eyes fall up on Travis and whilst vengeance is still at the forefront of his mind, he also wants to claim Tavish as his.
Tavish and Draven were good for each other. Tavish need someone to look after him, give him what he desires but also makes sure he gets his 3 meals a day and 8 hours of sleep. Tavish needed a Daddy. Draven fitted that bill, Tavish brought out the caring side of Draven, but could also take what Draven gave him.
Draven does not hide his Scottish side and I love that his terms of endearment are Gaelic, it makes Tavish feel special, throw in a bit of Swedish and you understand why Tavish is putty in Draven's very large hands.
This has a blend of new meets old thanks to the tech that Tavish has implemented in to the Society and you can understand how he survived in the Order.
This story is dark so if you do have triggers please read the content warning before going in to this page turner. I was that engrossed in the story that when it finished I wanted to know more and I cannot wait till second book comes out.

"Breaking the Code" by Sara Hurst was my first read by this author, and I'm thrilled it was! The dark secret society romance with an age gap and daddy kink immediately hooked me, and the story did not disappoint. I was captivated from start to finish, though the cliffhanger left me desperate for book two!

I love secret society romances and Hurst's unique take kept me guessing. The main society in the book, Societas Exspiravit, was formed as an uprising against The Order of Death (TOOD). Both Tavish and Draven have personal stakes in dismantling TOOD and their mission brings them together, though they struggle to resist their growing attraction. Dravenโ€™s daddy vibes and Tavishโ€™s role as the perfect boy create a slow burn thatโ€™s worth the wait, with their connection sizzling.

The book is filled with twists and turns, told from both Tavish and Draven's perspectives over chunks of time, which I enjoyed. Draven's Scottish background is vividly portrayed with authentic dialect, complete with a glossary, adding depth to his character.

The pacing was excellent, with a slow burn romance that builds a strong connection between the two main characters. Dravenโ€™s care for Tavish, like encouraging him to eat better, was a touching detail.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy suspenseful, dark romances with secret societies and a cliffhanger that will leave you eager for more. I can't wait for the second half of this duetโ€”I have a feeling itโ€™s going to be a roller coaster!

Wow this is dark
Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews. This is me leaving my honest review.
What a story! this story is built on revenge. Draven has lost everyone he loves, and when he gets a letter that is addressed to his father from his grandfather, his world explodes. Because he is now learning the truth about what happened to his family and he is out for revenge. The only problem is his husband Simon wants to help to. And it doesnโ€™t matter what he says he knows Simon is the best person to look for evidence.
Tavish did not have the best beginning to his life, he would listen when heโ€™s could hide in corners and nobody would notice him . And his father is killed. He is then in slaved to the order and there isnโ€™t anything he can do. He is amazing on the computer and he starts to gather information. He knows there will come a time where he will fight back.
What Will become of Draven who is so focused on revenge ? Will Tavish ever get a chance to escape?? What will happen when Draven meets Tavish the son of the man that killed his family??
I very nearly didnโ€™t finish this book because one I kept getting very confused and it was very slow. Two I didnโ€™t know how this story was going to come together, but Iโ€™m glad I did. Draven and Tavish are so opposites but the chemistry is way way off the charts. Can they come together to win this battle??? Ends with a cliffhanger that makes you scream for Book two.

Holy intensity, Batman! This story was incredibly emotional and action-filled. I'm not sure how the author was able to stomach some of the more tragic aspects of the story, but they were heart-wrenchingly necessary. Tavish & Draven were quite the dynamic duo, and super steamy together!
I love that the prologue we're treated to appears in the other MC's POV at the later applicable time in the story, because it helped to tie in the complicated feelings for the characters a bit.
I was drawn in immediately to the intrigue of the storyline, and the complexity of the characters. I hit only a minor snag in how I perceived the flow or language of the story. It seemed almost too wordy at times that I got lost in what was trying to be said/stated. It didn't hurt the story, but it did pull me out and force me to reread some sections more than once.
I don't know how I'll be able to wait two more months for the continuation of this story, but I will definitely need to know what's happening to Tavish! The MCs have a HFN, and the story ends on a serious cliffhanger, but I definitely recommend it to those who love action and intrigue. However, be sure to check the book's triggers, because there is some very rough content covered, including death, murder, sexual abuse, torture, and a few others.

I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

So much, so fast. It took me a while to figure out what was going on in the book. When readers get a good understanding of the story and are fully invested, it ends on a cliffhanger. I need the next book, Ms. Hurst. We are following the lives of two men that converge with the same goal. Tavish Buchanan was born into the Order and did whatever he needed to do to survive. Draven Helvig has experienced what the Order does. He was left with no family and managed to survive. When he started looking in to his family's deaths, the Order sent him a message that set him on his path to dismantle it.

Draven is full-blooded Scottish and speaks with a Scottish brogue. Readers might find it hard to understand at first. I like that Ms. Hurst likes to stay authentic to the characters. I can't imagine the amount of research that she does to do this. I will just continue to appreciate it. Eventually Tavish and Draven see each other and each has an instant attraction to the other. Draven and his spouse had been looking for a third similar to Tavish. Tavish was everything that Draven craved. The need to dominate and care for someone. Draven definitely fulfilled Tavish's daddy kink fantasy. They both still have goals. Will their goals get in the way of their growing affection? Action, adventure and some daddy kink. Yes, please. Ms. Hurst does it again. She will pull readers into this world. I know I am happy to live here because now I HAVE to know what happens next.

3.5 stars rounded up

Breaking the Code by Sara Hurst was an action filled beginning to the Sins of the Father series. Both Tavish and Draven have been through a lot of trauma and loss in their lives. Itโ€™s clear why they are drawn to each other.

This is based upon a shared world with other authors, so I did feel a little lost because I donโ€™t know these other characters or care about them. I bet if youโ€™ve read them this would make a lot more sense.

I did like these two together and Tavish definitely needed someone to take care of him. Heโ€™s so obsessed with getting even with the Order and helping those whoโ€™ve been victims. However, the Society does need to provide him with more help. Itโ€™s a lot to put on one person. Draven pushing Tavish away constantly was irritating. But I was glad when things changed.

The whole setup at the end seemed unwise and not thought out well. This does end on a huge cliffhanger so be aware of that. I will definitely read the next one to finish Draven and Tavishโ€™s story but I donโ€™t know if I would read beyond that,

I received an ARC from GRR for my honest review

โœจ MM dark romance romance

โœจ Revenge plot
โœจ Grumpy / sunshine
โœจ Enemies to lovers

Please be sure to read over the tropes and triggers before you start reading this book. OMG! I absolutely loved this book! So dark and filled with pain, torture, trafficking, revenge and desire. Our hot man Draven is driven by vengeance for his family and our other hottie Tavish was enslaved but both fight back with all they have, consumed. There is a major cliffhanger I disliked but you need to read this- it's so good. Be prepared for violence and a Daddy/Boy relationship and hold your breath while you read. I absolutely t totally love love loved it! Being that my family has Scottish ancestry and Iโ€™ve always been fascinated with Scottish men and their accents. Well Draven's sexy Scottish accent and words literally drove me wild! There is some repetition in Draven's feelings that wasn't necessary but it is his focal point. I canโ€™t wait to read more from this author. Also this is the first book Iโ€™ve ever read by Sara Hurst and I think Iโ€™ve found a new author i adore.

beautiful

This book does end with a cliffhanger as there will be a book 2 to continue the story so be warned.

I love this book itโ€™s so refreshing. Iโ€™m a fan of the tv show outlander so go see some Scottish phrases in the book takes me back to that time I was watching it.

Draven is like super sexy. Iโ€™ve read many books and never have I read a really tall Scottish man 6โ€™10 to be exact and looking almost like a Viking with beautiful icy blue eyes. I love and feel for Dravenโ€™s character. Losing your family and your husband only to try and find yourself at the end of the tunnel of darkness.

Taven is beautiful. Hes a little shorter than average so him and Draven make this sexy height difference dynamic which is hot. Heโ€™s complicated as his life hasnโ€™t ever been as easy one and heโ€™s been in survivor mode since his mom died. He had to face reality the hardest that sometimes you have to weight the lesser evil but both choices are still evil.

Book is incomplete as there will be a part 2 but I feel like with book 2 we will get a more in depth character development

If you love long backstories, very dark gang/mafia type stories, the victim growing and becoming strong, throw in some Daddy kink and extreme pining... this book series is 100% for you.

Please check the trigger warnings before reading this book. It has a lot of brutal descriptions and actions along with trafficking as a huge part of the story.

Two separate men are on the hunt to right the wrongs done to them by one man. With time, effort and patience, these two men become almost untouchable to undo what was done to them and others similar to them.

This story prides itself on a large back story not only for Draven but for Tavish as well.

Revolving around a secret society/ gang that takes advantage of everyone and everything, these two men have their work cut out for them. With the help of some unlikely friends along the way.

It continuously builds storyline and leaves you.. with a cliffhanger at the end.

This book had great heat, a load of sorrow and pain, growth, the struggle to grow, the passion to keep going and the heartbreak to make you want to weep.

Hurst does an excellent job in this story of hitting the notes of a dark romance, never shying away from the "dark" element of the subgenre, to bring together two characters who thrive with each other in the dark world they have found themselves in. I especially appreciated that Tavish's kinks are never portrayed as a result of his trauma and that he is allowed to find satisfaction in them *despite* his trauma. Draven's poignant attraction to him that goes far beyond the physical is a lovely emotional touch that never diminishes his own pain and tragedy. A few moments of the storyline felt disjointed, but I do understand Hurst is fitting this narrative around a collective story shared between books by multiple authors. None of this was enough to pull me out of the story enough to keep reading, and I'm already excited to dive into part two (and yes, there is a cliffhanger).

Tavish and Daddy Draven are just deliciously dirty, full of trauma, but so perfect for each other. Tavish is the victim of unfortunate circumstances and collateral damage with an enviable sense of survival and amazing hacking/computer/security skills. He knows what an asset he can be and he offers these skills to The Order of Death knowing that the only other possible outcome is to be sold. Draven, on the other hand is motivated by his desire for revenge when The Order of Death took away his family and his husband. He wants them all dead and will stop at nothing to avenge his loved ones. This is how their worlds collide. Tavish wanting to do something to help out Draven, and Draven trying to stay away from Tavish to keep him whole and safe. I love the angst, the slow burn, the desire, and the passion between them. With a great plot, character depiction, and delicious spice this book certainly left me wanting more. It does end in a cliffhanger, so I can't wait for book 2.

Iโ€™m going to be honest this is the first sara hurst book that I struggled with In the beginning. It to me was just a weird world that was too vague to really understand what you were reading . As I got further into the book I started to understand the language and the world the characters lived in. Itโ€™s definitely a book on the darker side but once I got into it I was so intrigued and was reading non stop dying to know whatโ€™s next. Tavish and Draven are both so full of trauma which I think is what makes their relationship different and intriguing to me. My favorite chapter was definitely 17 it was so passion led. The last 100 pages I could not put the book away. I loved reading as daddy and Tavishโ€™s relationship grew. The ending threw me off completely but now Iโ€™m excited for the next book.

This read starts a little slow but sets the scene for everything we need to know about Draven and Tavish. Part 1 of the book is full of mystery and suspense that will have you at the edge of your seat wanting to know more. The details are super dark but thrilling! Once I got to Part 2, oh boy was I hooked and strapped in for this ride! My heart is so sad about Simon, BUT Draven and Tavish, THE FIRE these two have burning inside for one another had me needing more. Knowing what we know about Draven and Tavish, they shouldn't be together. Im over here drooling at the spicy scenes. Holy smokes! If you like MM, Age-Gap, Dom and Sub, this read is one you won't want to miss! Please be TW aware as there are touchy subjects. Otherwise I LOVED THIS!!! I need more!

MM romance in shared world

I havenโ€™t read the books by Sara Hurst that share the world of the Societas Exspiravit Secret Society but I got hints from this book about the characters that are the flip side from this book. This book does more hinting at what happens than directly talking about it which is good because of what goes on. The main story is very exciting and suspenseful but I didnโ€™t like the relationship between Tavish and Draven as much as I might have. Too often the same thing repeats like the encounters between them and what they think about, sometimes I went to check back because itโ€™s even the same words that are repeated.
This book ends on a sharp cliffhanger.

Looking for a revenge story with characters destroying a secret society and forming their own to continue rooting out the remnants of the one they escaped?

That's gonna be this one for you. The story line is tense and well delivered, and the characters are complex. Overall, if you can get past some of it's flaws (which may be personal preference) it's a pretty entertaining book.

The flaw: the author chooses to write one of the character's accent pretty heavily in every chapter that he is the POV for. To the point that the word " of " in the internal dialogue or descriptions becomes " o' ". This was teeth-grindingly annoying for me when I picked this up and I was almost certain I'd end up DNFing just because I don't personally care for leaning that method of getting across the accent of a character. That said, once I hit the point where I could gloss past it with only mild frustration, the rest of the story and the other main lead made it worth it.

3.5/5 stars, rounded up for Goodreads. A good story, in spite of the main lead's dialogue.
