"Doctor Thorne" is the third novel in Anthony Trollope's beloved Chronicles of Barsetshire series, following "Barchester Towers" and preceding "Framley Parsonage." This charming tale, published in 1858, centers around the respectable but impoverished Dr. Thomas Thorne and his beautiful niece, Mary. Raised by her uncle after her father's disgrace, Mary grows up unaware of her true heritage. The plot thickens when Frank Gresham, heir to the Greshamsbury estate, falls in love with Mary, causing a stir due to her uncertain lineage and lack of fortune. As family secrets unravel and social pressures mount, "Doctor Thorne" explores themes of love, honor, and societal expectations with Trollope's signature wit and keen eye for human nature.

A Glimpse Inside
"My love," he said, "it is a matter in which you must judge for yourself. Did I doubt your conduct, I should interfere; but I do not."
"Conduct! Is conduct everything? One may conduct oneself excellently, and yet break one's heart."
This was too much for the doctor; his sternness and firmness instantly deserted him. "Mary," he said, "I will do anything that you would have me. If you wish it, I will make arrangements for leaving this place at once."

Anthony Trollope

Anthony Trollope became one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of Trollope's best-loved works, known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire; he also wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and gender issues and conflicts of his day.

Trollope has always been a popular novelist. Noted fans have included Sir Alec Guinness (who never travelled without a Trollope novel), former British Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir John Major, economist John Kenneth Galbraith, American novelists Sue Grafton and Dominick Dunne and soap opera writer Harding Lemay. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.
