He broke with existing literary forms and developed a new type of semi-autobiographical novel that blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, stream of consciousness, explicit language, sex, surrealist free association, and mysticism. His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, Tropic of Capricorn, and the trilogy The Rosy Crucifixion, which are based on his experiences in New York City and Paris (all of which were banned in the United States until 1961). He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors.

"I don't want to be bitter about life —about love and friendship and all the human, emotional entanglements. I've had more than my share of human disappointments, deprivations, disillusionment. I want to love people and life above all; I want to be able to say always, 'if you feel bitter or disillusioned, there is something wrong with yourself, not with people, not with life.'"

I can pick this book up at any time of any day and find something marvelous. "If you have the vision and the urge to undertake great tasks, then you will discover in yourself the virtues and the capabilities for their accomplishment." p. 53
