Unexpected Love #2

Seth's Awakening

Rate this book
After a devastating blow in my personal life, I hastily pack my bags and take off for San Diego, desperate for a new start. A new life. But where do I even begin? I sacrificed my entire adult life to raise my son, focusing on his dreams instead of mine. What do I now? How do I pick up the pieces?

Friends are hard to come by in the city that never slows down, especially for someone as depressed as me. Until a red-haired bartender at the neighborhood dive bar takes pity on me. His seemingly innocent gesture catches me off guard… but not nearly as much as my attraction to him. Declan is invading my every thought, every steamy, unrelenting dream.

Soon, he’s invading every hope. I want more, and I’m willing to risk everything to get it. But Declan has pain too, perhaps even deeper than mine. Opening his heart again just might shatter it completely.

Is it possible for two broken hearts to fit together? Or are we doomed to live in pieces forever?

I am an Idaho native who grew up dreaming about traveling the world and writing stories. As a child, I would often spend my spare time curled up with my favorite blanket and a notebook, writing another fairy tale. I never would have guessed those fairy tales would one day grow into gay romances, but that is where my heart led me and I am so glad it did. I write about love because I believe it can happen to anyone, with anyone. I also believe dreams never expire, redemption is possible, and true forgiveness can heal us in ways we never expect. I know firsthand how messy life can get, but as any artist will tell you, a little mess is needed to create something beautiful. That’s why I write, to help others see that anything can be beautiful. You can often find me with a mug of coffee in one hand and a dog toy in the other. There is never a day that goes by without my sweet boy insisting on a game - or twenty - of fetch.

“Is your heart racing as much as mine is?”

This hurts so good. My heart feels like it’s bursting.
After reading Teaching Quinn, all I could think about was seeing Seth and his HEA and this did not disappoint. And while book one was sexy and full of lust and love, I definitely loved Seth’s story more. It was deeper, more emotional.
It was a story of forgiveness, of loss, of grief, of new love, of new experiences.
Declan’s grief was painful, but seeing how he came back to life bit by bit was heartwarming.

I didn’t think it was possible to love again, but Seth proved me wrong.

I loved the little adventure dates, both men just feeling free and alive. Loved Seth exploring his sexuality, diving right in because it felt right, they felt right. This was a wonderful romance, and I’m looking forward to what else this series brings.

I’ve let Seth in and given him everything I have left. Every broken, imperfect piece of me.

First of all, the spice in this book doesn't play around! HOT. HOT. HOT.

Second, I loved watching Seth's story unfold, as well as him grappling with the inner turmoil of what happened in Book One. What I loved about this story most was the chance to fall in love with not just one main character, but two. I was rooting for him and Declan the entire time. On top of that, each side character didn't feel like a side character at all, but part of larger story. I loved all of them. If I had to critique something, it would be that I would love more screen time with all of the characters together. I loved watching everyone interact and come together to support each other like a family.

The romance between Seth & Declan is so heart warming. Watching two people heal from their trauma through love and connection was something I related to personally. Each scene felt unique, and the pacing was great! You can tell this author has experience writing in this genre. Nothing felt too manufactured, and the characters were SO well developed.

Overall, I loved it. I read Book One, and I can tell the author has grown a lot in her writing. I can't wait for Book Three!

I was excited to dive into this book because I needed to know what happened to Seth after his really terrible reaction to Quinn and Ian in the first book (Teaching Quinn). I was not disappointed.

Seth is absolutely, undeniably, infuriatingly self-absorbed at the start of this book. (Seriously, it takes him entirely too long to realize what that his estrangement from his son and best friend is mostly his fault, regardless of what they did). But grief is a fickle beast, with no rhyme or reason, and Seth is bottoming out rapidly - drinking too much and completely untethered in a new city and a new job. One bad decision after too many rum and cokes changes the course of his journey and puts Declan directly in his path. And watching him struggle, stumble, and ultimately take responsibility for his part made his growth and redemption feel that much more earned, and deeply human.

But, despite the title, for me the real star of the book was Declan. His grief is real and raw, and so suffocatingly tangible that I had to put the book down more than once to breathe through my own grief and memories it dredged up. Declan's pain isn't just a plot point, however. It's woven into every interaction and every quiet and loud moment of longing. But his pain, his hesitation, his guilt, and his cautious hope all felt incredibly authentic.

Seth's bi-awakening is another standout point of the novel. His confusion at these new feelings, his fear about telling his son, and his eventual acceptance are handled with care. It never feels rushed or forced - it's just a journey, and one that resonates deeply. Seth and Declan's absolute need for each other makes it clear that their connection isn't just about attraction, and the way Declan's story unfolds alongside Seth's makes their connection that much more powerful.

I couldn't put this book down and the fact that book 3 doesn't come out until July is just cruel, to be honest. (Because, really, what is going on with Jordan??) If you love emotionally charged, character-driven stories with flawed but redeemable main characters, this is a must read.

This book picks up shortly after the end of Book 1, Teaching Quinn, with Seth in San Diego living his new life — or is he. Lonely, missing his son and best friend but not ready to forgive or forget, working long hours then returning to his shabby, lonely little apartment, his only socializing is at Grahams, the small bar just down the street, where he goes to drown his sorrows. The owner and bartender, Declan, notices Seth and keeps an eye on him, recognizing a fellow soul fighting his own memories and demons. After a night where Seth loses it and Declan rescues him, the two begin a tentative friendship accompanied by an unusual physical attraction, especially for “straight” Seth. Declan encourages Seth to start a Life List of new things he wants to experience to get himself out of the depressing place he is in, agreeing to do some of them together. Parasailing is the first item on the list and both are surprised by some unexpected physical reactions, starting them on a new path in this developing friendship/relationship. As the two share their stories, their memories, fears and dreams, they find themselves enjoying life in a way they hadn’t for a long time. With both dealing with after effects of past relationships, Declan from the loss of his partner, and Seth the estrangement from his son and best friend, they find they are seeing life and their time together as a time of change and letting go of some things that had been holding them back. But relationships aren’t always smooth, and theirs is no exception, with misunderstandings and miscommunication threatening what they are building, until some self reflection and talking together puts them back on track to a lasting relationship.
I was glad to see more about Ian and Quinn and their relationship with Seth, the acceptance by Seth that he could be and was attracted to a man, and the way that Seth and Declan supported each other and helped work through the stresses of the old and this new relationship with understanding and caring. It made for an interesting and engaging read which had me rooting for them to realize they both were worthy of this new love and would pursue it to a HEA.

Get ready to be broken down and put back together!

Frequent interactions coupled with frustration bubbling to the surface force Declan and Seth to face their old demons while conquering new ones. This time together turns passionate and heavy, awakening Seth to a new world of emotion as his circle shrinks without Ian and Quinn to confide in. Seth and Declan teach each other to live not only for themselves but to truly live for each moment.

Seth's Awakening is full of emotion and self-realization with two men who feel abandoned and less than worthy of second chances. Seth is reeling from his son and best friend falling in love, keeping it a secret and not keeping him in the loop. Declan is surviving after the loss of his long-term partner Graham who was lost tragically and abruptly. They meet as Seth is still frustrated, angry, and lost while Declan is living but not for himself, running the bar that Graham left him.

Now as much as I loved this book and the continuation of this story, I was ready to smack Seth. I understood his frustrations around Ian and Quinn, and I definitely understood the hurt, but the way he wallowed in his anger toward them was frankly annoying at times. Then Declan would reinforce the hurt with agreement and I wanted to shake them both to see the other side. But this is also the point that we begin to realize how much Declan and Seth mean to one another and how much they need each other.

Seth gets a reality check in the form of a new song that wants to inspire those you've been beaten down in life to rise up from the ashes in a new form. He wants to share this moment with Declan but he's had his own heartbreaking moment it does not leave room to even think about the love he has for Seth. The men learn separately the way that they cope when trampled down tends to leave them broken and alone. Both are finally ready to let others fully in, be vulnerable and learn to love as they both deserve.

First chapter caught my attention…I felt for Seth’s loneliness, and thought premise was interesting.
But from 2nd chapter on, I was lost in a lot of over-explaining and telling by internal monologue.
I hadn’t read previous book and that may have led to a better understanding of some circumstances. From what I can tell, this book picks up at the point of Seth’s planned move but right after catching his son and best friend in the act. He left angry, feeling betrayed.
I tired of Seth’s rage… good grief… talk about a self-absorbed pity party. Feel hurt, get mad, but then figure it out rather than shunning the 2 people closest to you.. for 6 months! I could not relate.
Another peeve… might seem small, but I was confused by the multiple mentions Seth did not have a car… thought there had to be some significance but it’s never explained… no reason provided he doesn’t have a car but its mentioned many times. Perhaps that is explained in the first book as well as the multiple musical character that were name dropped a few times. Just left me with questions.
Now, the relationship was fine though I’m not convinced Declan was emotionally ready for a serious relationship and that’s okay given his grief… but he did respond very dramatically to Seth in the end… then pulled a Seth shut out. I guess karma. Now their chemistry was not as much as an awakening by Seth as a great big jump in… zero hesitation and Seth just went for it. The spicy scenes were written well. I enjoyed the protective nature of secondary characters and the honor to Graham. I’m glad his memory wasn’t tarnished and Seth was very mature about that relationship and Declan’s lasting love for Graham (though I wasn’t convinced and I wonder if they are going to live in Graham’s home).
All in all, not a bad but in my opinion, this read a bit unpolished. 3.5*.

Seth’s Awakening is book 2 in the Unexpected Love series. We met Seth in book 1 when he had a complete and utter meltdown from finding out that his son and best friend were in a relationship. He shut them down and moved to San Diego for a new job and a fresh start. I really had issues with Seth in book 1. He was a complete man-child. However, in this one, I was able to see beyond his tantrum into how hurt he was. I actually ended up loving him so much and watching him develop this relationship with Declan was so sweet. I loved Seth and Declan together. However, Declan really irritated me when he completely blew up on Seth and pushed him away. His overreaction and inability to listen to what Seth was trying to say made me dislike him just a little bit. He also was really focused on never being able to love Seth because his heart would only belong to Graham, his former partner. It made me a little bit sad for Seth like he was never going to get the love that he deserved as well. I really wish that Declan had been the one to make the first move back because he was the one that broke it off. It also irritated me a little when Quinn and Ian suggested that Seth always ran away when things were hard. That he tried “once or twice” just to say that he had. How many times is a person supposed to try to repair a relationship? If he tried once or twice and is still being rejected, then Seth has all the right to walk away to protect himself. Like I said, I really came to like Seth and was happy to see him loved. I am looking forward to Jordan’s story. He was very mysterious.

After reading Teaching Quinn, I had to read Seth's story. I felt for him, understood his pain. He felt abandoned. Then comes Declan, he is grieving and trying to breathe through the loss of his partner. This book was more than a sexual awakening. It was an emotional one as well for both Declan and Seth. I really enjoyed watching them grow together, and try to make it through their grief.

Seth's book is my favorite in the series so far. His book had a lot more emotion and depth, than Quinn's book. I am excited to see what Jordan's story will bring. ♥

First things first—this book does not hold back on the spice! The chemistry between Seth and Declan is electric, and the intimate scenes are just as intense as they are meaningful. But beyond the heat, what really stood out to me was the depth of their connection and how beautifully their relationship unfolded.

Seth’s journey was compelling to watch, especially as he grappled with the lingering pain from Book One. His struggles felt so real, and I found myself completely invested in his healing process. But what made this book even better was getting to fall in love with not just Seth, but Declan too. Their dynamic was heartwarming—two people finding solace in each other, growing together, and proving that love can be a source of healing.

The side characters were another highlight for me. They didn’t just feel like background players; they were an integral part of the story, adding richness and warmth. If anything, I would have loved even more moments with all of them together because the found family dynamic was chef’s kiss perfection.

Kim Breyon has clearly grown as a writer between Book One and this instalment. The pacing was spot-on, each scene had purpose, and nothing felt forced. Every emotion—from heartache to joy—was so well portrayed, making this book one of those reads that sticks with you long after you finish.

I absolutely loved Seth’s Awakening, and I need Book Three ASAP! If you love stories about healing, deep emotional connections, and scorching romance, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Seth flees to San Diego after a painful personal loss, desperate for a fresh start after spending his whole adult life raising his son. Lonely and unsure how to rebuild, he unexpectedly finds comfort in Declan, a red‑haired bartender whose kindness — and quiet intensity — catch him completely off guard. Their attraction grows quickly, but Declan carries deep wounds of his own, making it hard for him to trust again. As their connection deepens, both men must face their heartbreak and decide whether two broken hearts can finally fit together.

This story had such a powerful emotional pull, and the connection between Seth and Declan felt immediate and deeply affecting. Both men are hurting in their own ways, yet they manage to offer each other exactly the support, affection, and steadiness they’ve been missing. I loved watching them show up for one another through both the good moments and the painful ones — it made their relationship feel real and beautifully earned. The book is full of raw emotions and heartfelt scenes that are easy to read, easy to feel, and impossible to forget. There are definitely moments that bring sadness, but also plenty that bring warmth and hope. And best of all, it leads to a happy ending that feels truly deserved. This was an MM story with mature content.

Teaching Quinn was still very much in my mind when I saw the opportunity to read Seth’s Awakening and I am surprised to admit that I actually preferred book two. Seeing Seth’s point of view of the situation made me think really hard about how it must have felt to walk in on what he did, especially after what must have felt like a lifetime of putting himself second at best.

I absolutely loved Declan and my heart broke for him. I loved the relationship between the two of them, how respectful they were, how kind and thoughtful, and the sex between them was hot. The side characters were a decent bunch of people and towards the end where Declan helped Seth resolve certain situations, I was really pleased. I’m glad I got to read these two books so closely together and can heartily recommend this one. I’m looking through the author’s list of books as I would like to read more of their catalogue. Seth and Declan each have enough baggage to require a steamer trunk. I had more sympathy for Declan. He lost his partner two-years-age in a freak boating accident. After losing his marriage and a stent of homelessness, Graham was his salvation. He never wanted too inherent Graham's bar and really doesn't know what to do with it. The bar is struggling, but he is trying to maintain Graham's dream rather than build it into his dream.
Seth on the other hand had already accepted a job in San Diego and had a foot out the door when he returned to Idaho early without notice to learn his son Quinn and best friend Ian had gotten together. Rather than be happy they had found each other he was all boo hoo, poor me I feel so betrayed. Listen up it's not all about you. The universe is not centered around you. At least he got over his snit to embrace what Declan had to offer.
The secondary characters are all interesting and looking forward to Jordan's story.

Edna's Bakery, mushrooms, green jukebox, blue dart with feathers, broken lighthouse, nlack raven tattoo

This is a fantastic love story with heavy angst and steam. Both Declan and Seth have a lot of baggage. Declan is still grieving the sudden death of his partner two years ago. He's now the owner of Graham's Bar in San Diego. Seth is trying to start over by moving from Idaho to San Diego. He feels betrayed by both his best friend and son. He also lives under the cloud of two failed marriages. Seth has just about given up on life. He's the grumpy loner who's a regular at Declan's bar.

The story moves along at a good clip. The imagery evoked by the great writing are easily imagined. All the characters seem like real life characters, nothing too farfetched. I enjoyed this tremendously and highly recommend it.

A perfect book that illustrates how a great writer can take a characters that is not likable and redeem them to one we are rooting for. Such is the case with Seth, sure he was thrown for a loop in finding out his soon and best friend were in a relationship (book one, so be sure to read it first), but he responded and lives his life like a spoiled adult thinking the world revolves around him. Declan, the lovable bartender, he meets has had his own share of pain but responds more like an adult. I love the romance and steam between these two and this book has such an array of topics, ie. trauma, pain, love, anger, etc...but again the writer allows us to understand and see Seth grow up and these two become a wonderful couple who overcome their pain and trauma. A great book about healing, finding a new connection, and moving forward. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

I liked the first book, mostly for the two main characters who were well developed and pretty lovely. This new story has excellent characters as well, both main and side characters are so well done and authentic. Also, much appreciation for some truly excellent female characters! It also had a plot to pulled me in right away, I think because the writing did such an effective job at making me feel Seth’s pain and Declan’s grief. That pain and grief is really the catalyst to Seth and Declan initial connection, and the writing beautifully delivers their story with tons of heart and emotion. I loved it a lot, and was definitely attached to these characters. I loved seeing Quinn and Ian again and their reconciliation with Seth was so worth it- I loved all this big, messy emotions! This one was pretty perfect!❤️

It was sad that Seth, although struggling with his own personal issues, could not be understanding and happy for his son and best friend when they found love. Instead he turned his back and moved away. Seth needed the space and the time to figure himself out and to realize that although he felt he was, he was not the victim. Meeting Declan, who is dealing with loss and struggling himself was good for Seth. They are both feeling broken and both in need of healing and being around one another, coming to feel for one another gives them both the space to heal and feel again. Seth needed a period of growth so that he could be for Declan what Declan needed and deserved. It was easy to like Declan from the start and to root for him to find happiness again after his loss and sadness.

Seth and Declan ❤️

4 Stars ⭐️

Honestly, going into this after reading the first book I wasn't sure what to expect. I am so freaking happy I took a chance by reading Seth's story. I adored Declan and Seth's relationship build, it was about two broken men just trying to find their way. I loved the slow build from a tentative friendship to something neither expected but both needed so badly. It was sweet, sexy and so damn emotional especially Declan, his story broke my heart. I also adored how Seth finally admitted to fault and made things right with Quinn and Ian. I can't wait to see what's next, this is a must read if you've read the first book.

In the second book of the series, Seth feels betrayed by his BF Ian and son Quinn. He is drinking his sorrows away until the bar owner, Declan steps in to save him. Quinn is grieving his husband's death. Quinn is a likeable character but Seth is selfish in his rage of Ian and Quinn. It's all about him, not their happiness and its hard to empathize with his feelings. As Seth and Declan spend time together, things change and Seth finally grows up. The end is redeeming. It's a book filled with feelings- rage, pain, loss, joy and love. I received a copy of this through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.

A new job has forced Seth into a new job in a new city and his loneliness is only compounded by finding out his son and best friend are in love. Alone in a new city the only place he can find any sense of community is the neighborhood bar, Graham's. Declan is the friendly bartender with the bright smile and hidden broken heart. He inherited the bar from his late partner and is doing his best to keep everything running in his memory. Declan offers Seth a shoulder to cry on and together they begin to heal their hurts. I enjoyed seeing Seth become more confident and start to rebuild a new support system and seeing him reach out to repair the damage he caused before.

Seth and Declan deserve everything good. I love that Seth never once was jealous of Graham. Not. Once. This is basically a guidebook on how to love someone after the death of a partner. He wanted to talk about Graham. He wanted to know everything about him.

I still don't love Quinn and Ian. Especially since they barely apologized. Seth deserves more than these two but they're who he wants so it is what it is I guess.

Seth's Awakening is a deeply emotional story of self-discovery and healing. Seth struggles with feelings of abandonment after his son and best friend fall in love and keep it a secret from him. Meanwhile, Declan is still grieving the sudden loss of his long-term partner, Graham, and is going through the motions of life, managing the bar Graham left behind. When Seth and Declan meet, Seth is angry and lost, while Declan is living but not truly for himself. Together, they navigate their pain, finding healing and hope as they learn to embrace second chances.

Life lists can center you! Seth, experiences an emotional shock and betrayal from his best friend, Ian and his son, Quinn. He packs up and moves to San Diego. He is lost and emotionally broken. Then he meets Declan in a bar and his life takes an uptic. Declan, is working through loss. Seth, explores a new side of himself and finds his balance. Good story, great flow. The author manages betrayal, disappointment, loss, grief and opening the door to new beginnings with sensitivity and flare. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

In the first book, I could not stand Seth. I found him self centered and cruel. In this book, I start out still irritated by him and his ridiculousness. I almost did not finish because he was unlikeable to me. His personality is just gross. Who treats their kid the way he treats Quinn? I mean I get why he's upset but he took it to a new unacceptable level. Honestly, I don't like the book. At all. It's a 4, really probably a 3.5, only because I like Kim Breyon's writing style. She's phenomenal but this character sucks too much for me to like this love story.

Great addition to the series!

I loved Seth's Awakening by Kim Breyon. It's the second book in the Unexpected Love series. I loved Seth and Declan. I loved their chemistry and how they both helped each other start living again instead of just existing. I also loved that Seth was able to mend his relationship with his son and best friend. It was great seeing more of Ian and Quinn. I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out.

I think the best part of this book is how Seth really started out behaving quite selfishly. Only worried about his own hurt feelings. Meeting the grieving bartender Declan and beginning to change. It was so real because Declan even though struggling with the loss of his husband still was also a bit frustrating and did not say or react in the best way. Two real men both of them a bit broken find their back together, learning to deal with their emotions.

This is a story about two people trying to heal with each other through a bit of support & love, trying to deal with traumas in their pasts, trying to either get over their sorrows or sadness.

The characters were well developed, and at times there were some communication issues. At times there was immaturity a bit, but still, they were quite sweet together, in the end.

Seth was an irritating character in the first book in the series. However this book really highlighted him in a different light. He was extremely hurt and in turn reacted the way he did. I get it, still irritating but I get it.

I enjoyed Declan and Seth together. I feel as though they complimented each other. That is until Declan unnecessarily overreacted and pushed Seth away. Why? Just why???

Overall a quick read, even though mildly irritating at times.

I absolutely loved following Seth's journey. For me this was a huge improvement on the first book as I really bonded with both the mc's making it an enjoyable read. Plenty of angsty moments with him coming to terms with the previous events. Their relationship development is so heartwarming. A great bunch of side characters and found family help them heal from their trauma in this perfectly paced storyline. Highly recommend

This book was really good, and had a great look into the reality of finding new obe after having a partner pass away and all the problems that come eith that. The writing was very easy to read and the characters were human and relatable which made them interesting yo read about. The only thing is I felt the other mc story was a little rushed at the end but the outcome and plot were still good and the emotions he also went through are very real.
