Sustainability, resilience, ESG. What does it all mean? In his groundbreaking book, Leaving Planet Simple, Dr. Alex Gold cuts through the clutter and sensationalized headlines to explain how you can truly transform your business. Many business leaders today are stuck on Planet Simple. It’s a pleasant place—and state of mind—but it’s not the real world. For centuries, particularly since the Scientific Revolution of the 1700s, humankind has sought to master and rule over nature. While this has brought many benefits including increased human health, nutrition, and quality of life, it has also brought catastrophe, environmental degradation, a warming climate, and an often-inequitable society.
Now, Dr. Gold, with a PhD in resilience science and extensive corporate experience, shows us that rather than trying to master it, nature has quite a bit to teach us. With his deep background in resilience science, which emerged nearly fifty years ago from the world of ecology, Dr. Gold explains that what often hinders business leaders today is an outdated mindset. This is life on Planet Simple, a world where businesses can operate in isolation, separate from the environment and the communities they inhabit. Instead, Dr. Gold shows us that a business, really any organization, is much more like a natural environment, an ecosystem where all the parts are interconnected and changing all the time. Business leaders must leave Planet Simple, abandon this simplistic mindset, and embrace a new resilience mindset better suited for Planet Earth.
Companies and organizations around the globe are increasingly being asked—or required—to report on how they are resilient to environmental and social change. As a modern-day business leader, you have a choice. You can ignore these trends—although that is quickly becoming impossible in many jurisdictions—or treat these requirements as just another compliance exercise; a series of boxes to be checked or reports to be filed. Alternatively, as Dr. Gold argues in this book, you can embrace them, transforming your operations to build a resilient business that learns, evolves, and adapts in the face of uncertainty.
It's time to leave behind the simplicity of old paradigms and begin a thrilling journey toward a sustainable, resilient, and thriving future.
I really loved this book. It helped me to challenge myself into thinking and considering if technological advancement is worth all the moral dilemmas that come as a result of it. It was really great that the author implemented a deep exploration of the morality of each one in research of everyone’s purpose set in a world full of simplicity.
One of the main things that made this book to highlight was the use of elements that combined science fiction with a tiny pinch of philosophical thought. Also, the characters created were pretty well developed into a trayectory full of tension and tradition. In addition to the well-developed characters, this book had a flawless world building technique, this one’s being pretty rich in details and made the book compelling to the public. Overall, this is a great book that many fans of fiction should keep in mind as a must read.
This is an excellent book promoting sustainability in businesses. The book talks about adaptive management, where the leadership roles are trained to be more flexible and resilient to simplify the process for them and their employees. In this management style, the organization is trained to understand and grow with uncertainties and adjust to what is needed instead of simply reacting to them; it shows a lot about preparedness in the office. The goal is not to be a machine, a cog that spits out efficiency without understanding; it teaches businesses to navigate through possible challenges easily and achieve the best outcome possible. It is an information book, but I would work on the diagrams, tables, or any pictures in the book. I bought the Kindle one; some are unreadable and blurry. I hope it gets fixed :)
If you own a business, but it’s not seeing the success that you would like, there are any one of a number of solutions you might try. However, many so-called cures to your business blues won’t work. They are usually outdated or they never worked at all.
This book features an updated way of looking at the world that business leaders need to embrace if they want to see a real, quantifiable change for the better. It mostly involves learning how to be resilient in a time that frequently seems to throw curve ball after curve ball at you. The author explains in detail how your resilience and ability to embrace sustainability can be your greatest assets as you try to compete with others in your niche or industry.
From the cover, I was hooked on this book. The minimalist style of the cover made me understand that this book was coherent with its content. Personally, I believe that people should be educated on these topics such as sustainability, resilience and ESG. These topics are increasingly relevant to both individuals and organizations. The narrative of this book is unique and makes reading it an enjoyable and certainly very rewarding exercise. I have the opportunity to work for a risk consulting firm and witness the increasing relevance of this topic in organizations. These issues cut across all types of organizations regardless of industry or sector. Highly recommended.
This is a relevant read with a different perspective on how to see and do business. We know that this is an important and relevant moment to adopt sustainable strategies, and in general, we have established concepts that are not helping to create a sustainable business and can be a challenge. Author Dr. Alex Gold invites us to challenge traditional concepts and show us how we can transform business practices by using tools to integrate sustainability, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) into corporate strategy and operations. This is a particularly relevant book for business leaders looking to prepare for the future of their companies and contribute to the environment. It is a must-read.
Today, people are more committed to the environment, the environment among others, for this reason, companies cannot be created behind and must take into account the behavior and demands of consumers. For all these reasons, companies must change their approach, contributing to the future of the planet. This change must be made not only for the interest of staying in the market, but because it is a reality that this help is needed. In this book, Dr. Alex Gold gives a series of guidelines and aids for the company to make this change in an easier way, making it a resilient company and committed to the environment and social environment.
If you are part of the sustainability teams of a high-impact company, this should be your onboarding text, which is an excellent resource for finding an innovative approach to sustainability.
The book delves into the concepts of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and sustainability, showing how these concepts can be integrated into business strategy in a proactive and strategic way, and not just as a response to regulations. This is a must read for business leaders looking to build a sustainable future but one that aligns with the KPIS required for companies to grow economically.
This book helps to rethink the business practices we have today, and at the same time IT has an approach that helps us think much more and reach a reflection. I consider that this book has value for businessmen and entrepreneurs who want to find a different direction for their companies and generate a positive impact on the people around them.
Leading a organization while considering the environment
Nowadays there’s a lot of banter on whether organizations can be held accountable for environmental efforts, can we coexist with a simple clean planet. This book discusses those points in a unique way. A wonderful read!
