When Secrets Fall: A Novel of Hope” is an intelligent text written by Christian author Robert Cavazos and the third book in his Reflection series. Here, the writer peers into the dynamics of our lives, examining the bonds that hold families together and the secrets that often remain hidden, revealing that nothing truly seems certain. By unlocking the hidden facts that lie before us, only then will we comprehend the true meaning of our lives.
Logan has had a complicated and strained relationship with his emotionally distant father since he was young, resulting in harbored feelings of pain and resentment. When he receives an urgent call from his mother informing him of his father’s impending decline in health and requesting him to travel home, Logan remembers every missed opportunity for connection in the past. He makes the hard decision to go see his father with his wife and daughter.
Upon his father’s demise, Logan helps his mother sort out his father’s belongings, uncovering his father’s immense love for archeology. Logan discovers a worn journal that Thomas wrote about his archeological expeditions in Egypt. Considering his father a mystery who remained enigmatic his entire life, Logan believes that the journal might open a window into his father’s soul, allowing him to understand his father better.
Logan finds himself plunged into a dangerous world full of secrets and mysteries. But unbeknownst to him, his path would soon cross with that of Agent Brock, who is also determined to find the truth, and their respective journeys become tangled with a mysterious artifact.
The timeless engines that propel fiction are the secrets lying beneath a tale and the unraveling of these secrets by the main protagonist, making the reading experience quite rewarding. The book excels in this, as does its neatly tied ending. Its real force lies in the intertwining of the facets of Christian faith with the book’s motifs of forgiveness and reconciliation. This aspect pulls you along swiftly to the book’s end.
Robert Cavazos has written a deeply affecting novel. His pivotal work is easy to read with the characters’ actions described vividly. We live in a dark world, and books such as this offer some form of hope to readers along with a guiding light, encouraging moral integrity while still providing a rewarding reading experience. That the prose is reflective and varies in style is a bonus for the author. “When Secrets Fall” by Robert Cavazos will make you stop, think, and draw from its recognizable insights and human truths. Readers who enjoy fiction, especially slice-of-life stories with moving takeaways, will find this book to be a worthy companion.
When I saw this book, I was so excited. A lot of my interests are very niche. I typically assume that if I want stories that explore certain subjects, I will have to write them myself, particularly if I want any kind of spirituality involved. When Secrets Fall has a large focus on Ancient Egypt, namely, found artifacts that speculate possible ‘otherworldly’ origins.
Logan Williams has been estranged from his father for years. With a family of his own now, he feels it’s time to reach out, but he soon gets word of Thomas’ terminal illness. He survives long enough to meet his granddaughter and reconcile with Logan. After his passing, Logan’s mother enlists her son’s help to clean out their second home which had been kept a secret from him up until now.
The house is filled with artifacts that Thomas collected during his career as an archeologist – another secret that had been kept from Logan. Though hurt and confused, his curiosity triumphs when he discovers his father’s journals in which he theorized a Biblical connection to Imhotep. Like father, like son, these artifacts become an obsession and Logan wants to venture to Egypt, hoping to bring his father’s work and theories to light.
This mission is not without complications. The FBI gets involved and Logan must discern if the agent is friend or foe, however, this might become a relatively minor problem when he realizes that he is recreating his father’s patterns and putting work before his family.
I do wish that the pacing had been slower. Everything happens so quickly (typically within a couple of pages) that nothing has time to sink in. It left me feeling a disconnect between both the plot and the characters. I would have loved to have seen more time spent on character development, especially the relationship between Logan and his father.
Above all, this story is about forgiveness, faith, and family. The talk of artifacts and the intrigue of theories certainly is the draw, but I wouldn’t say that’s where it shines given how far-fetched it is as a whole (both in theory as well as logistics). Nevertheless, it’s the source of action that drives the heart. My favorite scenes were the talks between Logan and Grace. I did have fun with the rest, of course, as it's what drew me to the book in the first place. I would love to see a Christian/Sci-Fi book from this author!
(When Secrets Fall appears to be the third book in a series, however, it reads as a standalone.)
