Of all the things I've learned from these books about the American Civil War, the strangest fact comes from this one – that one of the battles took place in the English Channel.
Aiming to stop transatlantic trade, a confederate privateer called the Alabama has been attacking and sinking ships. To put a stop to this, the Union warship The USS Kearsarge has set sail to confront it.
On board are Chesterfield and Blutch, put into hiding to save them from a firing squad. Not that they've done anything wrong, other than been forced to take the blame for a general's incompetence. Regardless of the how, they're on board when the ship docks in Amsterdam. Chesterfield is not taking their enforced trip abroad very well. He's grumpy, short-tempered, and at odds with everyone. Blutch, meanwhile is taking it in his stride.
There's a double-page spread, largely wordless, that is a love letter to Amsterdam, with the pair wandering around and seeing the sights. It's one of the few occasions of genuine trouble-free downtime they've been able to experience. Of course, it doesn't last long. Once news of the Alabama's whereabouts become known a fresh battle must be fought.
The gags are great too, with Chesterfield a veritable fish-out-of-water while on the water. I'll even go as far to say that this may be on the best books of the series to date. Worthy of your attention.
