Write Malay

Rate this book
Still the best single introduction to writing (and thus reading) Malay, this book is both concise and comprehensive in its coverage of the written and official language. It is a must for any serious student of Bahasa Melayu.

This review is for the 3rd Edition (1982).

I would describe this as an intermediate textbook on Malay, it assumes you know some Malay already, ideally King's first book 'Speak Malay'.

What I really like about this book is that you get a large number of readings, analytical and in-depth explanations of how the grammar works, and lastly social and cultural information.
The exercises are mainly translations, which I don't mind because I think they are the most effective type of exercises when you learn a new language. If you are aiming to get fluent in this fascinating language then this book should be useful to you.
