Still the best single introduction to writing (and thus reading) Malay, this book is both concise and comprehensive in its coverage of the written and official language. It is a must for any serious student of Bahasa Melayu.
I would describe this as an intermediate textbook on Malay, it assumes you know some Malay already, ideally King's first book 'Speak Malay'.
What I really like about this book is that you get a large number of readings, analytical and in-depth explanations of how the grammar works, and lastly social and cultural information. The exercises are mainly translations, which I don't mind because I think they are the most effective type of exercises when you learn a new language. If you are aiming to get fluent in this fascinating language then this book should be useful to you.
