The author chronicles his time spent fishing the Neversink and focuses on its history and fishery management. Great book if you have any interest in the history of fly fishing and the Catskills. The author doesn't hesitate to go into details of some embarrassing mistakes but also humbly shares his accomplishments and learning experiences. Enjoyed reading it.
An interesting story about a man’s love affair with his private trout stream in the Catskills and how he tries to make it more productive. Not really a fishing story but I enjoyed it
Found this book at the cabin we rented in Claryville - the same town in which Mr. Wright had his home on the Neversink River. Mr. Wright wrote in a folksy way; it reminded me of listening to an elderly uncle wax on about his hobbies/areas of expertise. There were even the occasional sexist cheesy jokes about the ladies - always being scared, disliking smelly things and being in charge of the laundry. I skimmed the passages that went into great detail about fly fishing but there weren't that many. Wished there could have been some pictures/drawings/maps especially when describing the various insects of the Neversink. When writing about caddisflies Mr. Wright states " almost everyone is familiar with the few common species"; I've never heard of them and would have liked more visual detail on this interesting sounding insects - they build mini mobile log cabins! Overall it was a quick and easy read that taught me much about this beautiful part of NY.
