The context in which this is written only makes it stronger.

Ignatius shows the importance of unity in the Church, wrecks gnostics and those who deny the body and blood in the Eucharist, and bonus, destroys Islam five centuries before Mohammed shows up. Absolute chad.

I’ve been abandoning my baptist roots for quite a while and this strengthens that tendency.

This is a must read for every christian.

Reviewers Note: It is the middle of 2025 and I am not doing a good job of keeping up with this desired goal of mine to write book reviews. I do not want to lower my expectations but I am going to so that I can catch up. This will mean short reviews on the books I read.

St. Ignatius of Antioch: The Epistles
41 Pages

Short read but I believe disciples of Jesus should read these letters.

“They abstain from eucharist (thanksgiving) and prayer, because they allow not that the eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, which flesh suffered for our sins, and which the Father of His goodness raised up.”

My mind is being rewired.

St. Ignatius, a disciple of St. John, writes these epistles to various churches while he is on the verge of being martyred for the faith by wild beasts in Rome.

These epistles give a valuable insight into how the early church operated and what they believed. St. Ignatius writes extensively on the importance of unity in the church and obeying the bishops. He likens this to an instrument being in tune. He also writes about the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist.

This collection of short letters is a must read for every Christian who desires to know more about the early church and what they believed.
