I read a signed first edition given to my late grandmother by the author.
As the book jacket says, this book "is a revealing account of the everyday life of a close-knit black family in the south during the first half of" the twentieth century as recounted by Winona, who was around 10, at the start of the story. It is the story of a girl growing up in the segregated south and following her dreams. At only 52 pages, the concise, spare telling is both moving and moves with a pause here and there to flesh out a more meaningful part of the story. It was not, though, rushed in any way in my mind.
