I give this three stars. Honestly, the first in the series was so good because it had mystery and intrigue. I loved the fact that you didn’t have all the answers and what you did know made you wonder. In part two you are given almost all of the answers and to be frank, even in this fiction plot, it was unbelievable and far fetched for a story line. It felt like you were waiting on this crazy moment to find everything out but when it finally came I was saying, “yeah right” at almost every turn. That being said, the writing style is fast paced and gripping and for that I give it three stars.
The only reason I gave this continuation of the story 3 stars was because I found the ending to be excellent. Outside of that, this was a very underwhelming sequel to the fantastic The Cosmic Key.
First and foremost, it was way too predictable; the 'twists' pretty mundane and obvious. Secondly, it lacked that adventerous excitement the first book offered in abundance. I understand this was a continuation of the original story, but still, there was virtually zero exciting parts of this story safe for a few moments and its ending. Thirdly, Sarah whined way too much in this sequel as opposed to her composed and assertive self in the first book.
Agent McKinney is a great character and I thoroughly enjoyed all his chapters. Whitlock's chapters were pretty much all the same. Sarah's chapters had her whining 90% of the time, and Bill Davenport was just an utter bore to read. That said, the position of the Invisible Custodian, as well as exactly who (or what) the Count of Saint Germain is, are topics I hope are expanded upon further in the next Daniel Whitlock book.
I loved the first book in this series. It was tense, exciting, and contained a conspiracy that I was very intrigued in believing.
This second book is a direct continuation of that story. The characters are there, the conspiracy is slightly there, but the thrill is non-existent. These characters don't do anything this entire book, and the climax is very, very underwhelming.
If you love the first book as much as I did, it's worth a read. But don't expect too much more. Keep your expectations low.
I'll definitely read more from Patrick Donohue, but I need more similarities to that first adventure. Make me question history and I'll definitely be on board.
I really enjoyed the first book, but I had a little trouble remembering all the important characters and closing events from the two years separating the novels. What was missing at the beginning was a brief / quick synopsis (as some authors do) of what had transpired from the previous novel to set the stage for the new story.
What I did recall about Cosmic Key (book #1) was lots of interesting / possibly speculative “factoids” about various historical figures, locations, and events. This story had some, but not to the degree as the first book. All in all, I found this story to be a good thriller with a few twists thrown in, but not quite as exceptional as the previous novel.
Very nice. No sophomore slump with this second book. Plenty of things to think about. Plenty of action. One nice twist that I did see coming. Was glad to see I was right. The book is more than a few conspiracies. Recommended.
