The members Nine Families are on en route to a city named Xalditrois, a huge city of magic built in the northern shores of Denmark. When Brandon is supposed to do is initiation to be a part of the Seven Twilight Kings, things take a big turn when the Necros came to Xalditrois doorstep, forcing Brandon to make a choice that will turn his life upside down in a world where more mysteries take flight.
This was the second book in the Dreaming Myth Series. I've gotta say that with a better editor, both of these books would be 5 star books. The world and the characters are so amazing! Though the editing in this book is lightyears better than the first one, which sounded like a a Russian mobster wrote it. The English in this one is very much more sophisticated, and a pleasure to read.
THE PLOT: Just like in the other books, you don't really know what will happen at the end, much less on the nest page. This isn't a twisty, turny plot - it's more like DNA gone wild. The last time we left our heroes, Brandon had found some ancient ruins, and inside the ruins was a diary/spellbook and an Angel's sword. They kept moving on to a land of thunder lightning, Brandon used the spellbook to call a dragon to transport them across. Once they get there, the Necros are attacking; they want Brandon really bad, bad enough to kill 10000 of their own to work a spell. Still, Brandon and his friends kick butt that day. They go on to Xaldatrois in Denmark where he can be initiated as the 6th Twilight King.
All kinds of things happen in this book including: betrayal, alchemy, murder, massive battles, a lot of travelling, dragons, Satanists, killings, mind spells, returned memories, crystal castles, Heaven on floating islands, very evil bad guys, vampires, werewolves, relatives, found Fathers, and a whole lot more.
WORLDBUILDING : The worldbuilding in this book is like the last one - simply stunning. Now we have the inner world, plus more of the Elemental Dream World and the Netherworld described in this book than the other one. That's a lot of worldbuilding for a single book, but Brandon makes it look easy witout resorting to core dumps on the reader to get his points across. Worldbuilding is Brandon's strong suit along with dialogue and characterization, a healthy triumverate.
CHARACTERIZATION: The characterization in the two books is stunning, the characters feel so real, it's like my kids could bring them home for supper. They are fully human and three dimensional, with flaws and damage, dreams and asperations - whether human, lycan, faery, elf, or dragon. Each book is written in first person POV, primarily, from one of the protagonists. - so you feel what they feel. Know what they know. See out their eyes. React as they do. This makes each protagonist understable in his or her own right. It also makes the story more personal, because it puts you inside their heads. This helps quite a lot when you're getting to know the characters, or they're going through something traumatic.
DIALOGUE: Brandon is the master of teenage dialogue (being one himself, it must make it easier). He knows just the right things for his characters to say in any given situation - whether rebellious, contrite, respectful, or sincere. It is a quixotic balance at the best of times, but again, Brandon makes it look easy without a note out of place.
EDITING: The editing in this book is like the second book - lightyears better than the first, but not quit e there. You have repeated words, missing words, missing letters, homophones and a few others. My offer still stands Brandon, I'll edit all the books, if we can come to some agreement, so you can get those 5 star reviews you deserve. You can reach me through Goodreads.
Overall, it's a 5 star series trapped in a 3-4 star presentation. For those who love epic fantasy, you just can't miss this series. I liked it better than Jordan and Goodkind, so hurry up and get to Smashwords and download all these files. You'll kick yourself if you don't do it before Brandon's a great author with a lucrative publishing deal - then you'll have to pay big bucks for the same privilege.
