Celebrating the amazing career of AFL star Tom Hawkins, from his family background, with his dad also a champion player, through to his contribution to Geelong's ongoing success on the football field, we learn what has made Tom a star. From a scholarship in 2006 as an under-18, Tom’s career has been full of accolades, including three times being part of a winning premiership team for Geelong, four McClelland trophies, five all Australian team selections, a Coleman medal in 2020, eleven times being the leading goal-kicker for Geelong and many many other accolades. In Tom An Autobiography you will discover what has made him the star player he is, and meet all of the people who have been part of his journey including players, coaches and family. Tom's story is rich with events, people and the development of a winning attitude that has been his mainstay.
Refreshingly honest. Superstars can also have self doubt. It's up to the superstar or anyone else for that matter how they are to work through that self doubt and emerge at the other side. Well done Tommy on all your accomplishments. Good luck on the next chapter of your life.
4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Summed Up: Kicking Goals In Footy and Life
- - - I know what you’re saying… Another footy memoir review Ash? You bet! 🏉✨
I’ve officially fallen in love with listening to sporting memoirs via audiobooks and this one from Geelong legend Tom Hawkins didn’t disappoint. Sure, I’m not a Cats fan (sorry Tom!), but his story is still absolutely worth a listen.
Tom gave lots of great insight to his footy journey but what really stood out for me was Tom’s raw honesty throughout the book showing that it’s not all grand finals and glory.
He dives deep into the struggles and pressures of AFL life, sharing the highs and the lows. It’s like a front row seat to some of the most iconic moments in footy with Tom’s passion for the game, his family, farming and his Geelong pride shining through. 💙🤍
Tom gave some great insight to his footy journey and I felt he was really open and honest in sharing the lows that come with the pressure of being an AFL player, rather than just sharing all the good parts.
But the real MVP for me? The way Tom talks about his wife Emma. As a longtime fan of her and her business success over at Homegrown, I was so touched by his appreciation for her unwavering support throughout his career. Whether it was uprooting her city life during his early days or sticking it out through COVID hubs you can just feel the love and respect he has for her and their three kids 😍
Much like my review of Joel Selwood’s memoir earlier in the year, it’s always so tough to ‘rate’ a memoir (you’ll see a lot of 4’s from me in this space). Would I have loved Tom to narrate this audio book himself? Absolutely! But even without his voice, this book is a winner.
This is a great read for AFL fans or anyone needing a reminder to keep chasing those dreams, no matter the setbacks! 👏
