From my Nana’s bookshelf and her review:

This book was written with help but these are the experiences of Bruce Sibert(s) who came to SD and lived near Pierre and Fort Pierre across the Missouri in the 1890s. It is the story of the cattlemen, sheepmen and those who raised horses. The experiences are raw and hard for it also was the area of the trading posts for the Sioux Indians.

Having lived in the West River Country in Belle Fourche SD for 22 years, the experiences “before fences” and the early round ups are classic stories of that period.

I keep thinking of our own Bob Pughe who was a sheep rancher in the Wyoming/Montana area at the time of World War I 1914-1918 and left his holdings to serve in France. He later sold his sheep and became a highly respected rancher who raised Hereford bulls for breeding purposes. His animals were sought after over a wide area. He also lived alone for many years.

Living with horses on the grasslands of the Dakotas, not all that long ago. A world we can't know except here, in these pages.
