Junk Journal Joy: Find Calm and Self-Confidence with Junk Journaling is an absolute delight—creative, soothing, and genuinely empowering. This book perfectly captures the magic of junk journaling as both an artistic practice and a form of self-care, making it accessible to beginners while still inspiring seasoned crafters.

The guidance is warm and encouraging, emphasizing process over perfection. Instead of rigid rules, the book invites experimentation, play, and intuition—using everyday scraps, memories, and textures to create something meaningful. The exercises are thoughtful and grounding, gently guiding readers toward mindfulness, reflection, and self-trust.

What truly sets this book apart is its emotional resonance. It shows how creativity can be a tool for calm and confidence, turning discarded bits and pieces into a visual record of growth and self-expression. The tone is reassuring and nonjudgmental, making it feel like a creative companion rather than an instruction manual.

Junk Journal Joy is inspiring, therapeutic, and beautifully affirming. A five-star favorite for anyone looking to reconnect with their creativity and themselves—one page at a time.

The book does a good job of explaining junk journals and giving questionnaires to help guide you through the process of making your own, what you want to use it for, and other intentions. However, I do wish the structure was a little different - it didn't make sense to have the introductory prompts section and the “How to Use a Junk Journal for Self Care” sections separated by the tutorials. I actually think having a few more subsections might have made a better flow overall to the book, serving as a better “step-by-step” guide. I don't think doing it that way would have sanitized the concept of a junk journal. Plus, including tutorials at the end just feels a little more intuitive, so that readers can flip there whenever they want and have an easy time of finding things, rather than the tutorials being in the middle.

all encompassing

I picked this book to get some ideas regarding junk journaling. I already journal but looking to use less commercial items and more recycled. However, this book gave me so much more. I felt the freedom to be authentic, to play and explore. Validation that my creations have value even if never seen by others. I enjoyed the prompts and how they made me think about how and why I journal.

I wasn't familiar with this author. She suggests answering many questions to get inspiration for journaling. It's setup like a workbook. Chapter 16 was especially useful. The art part or techniques were basic for me. The photos on my kindle were dark and not helpful but might be to start.
