Take Off From Within is meant as a reminder of that ancient mind principle and its application to everyday life. Dr. Ervin Seale (1909-1990) has but one thing to say but tries to say it in a variety of ways. If it is true that as you think, so you are, then thinking is the most consequential activity of a human being. Take Off From Within is not religious, but it is spiritual. It talks about the human spirit and the mind which directs that spirit. It does not tell what to think, but it teaches how to think. Each chapter visits an important waystation in the journey of life.
“If it is true that as a man thinks so is he, then thinking is the most consequential activity of a human being. In these pages I have tried to recall to mind and present anew some of the tools of the trade whereby one may become a better craftsman in the production of health and happiness.”
“It is what you think of this situation that governs you and not the situation itself. Causation is always in mind and not in things.”
“Underlying this weakness is the too strong belief that events are causative and not enough awareness that the soul is the arbiter of destiny.”
~ Ervin Seale from Take Off From Within
I don’t remember exactly how I got turned on to this little gem of a book (I went on a little old school New Thought binge awhile ago) but I’m glad I did!
Ervin Seale was a leading New Thought minister who, for 32 years, addressed a large audience at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City.
He’s in the same genre/lineage as an Ernest Holmes, Louise Hay, James Allen and this book is a slim 120 pages. Easy read. Lotsa mojo. Highly recommended if you’re into this kinda thing. :)
Let’s explore some of the Big Ideas:
1. Our Minds: - A mad, drunk, jumping monkey. 2. The Sovereign Agent - The beholding mind. 3. Wayfarers on the Way - … To self-discovery. 4. Oh! You Like This?? - I’ll give you more then. :) 5. What Others - Think Ignore it.
I love Ervin Seale's New Thought philosophies and teachings. He writes of the Great Mind, the Universal Mind of which we are all a part. An important part of his writing stresses to give no power to people, places and circumstances...that there is a greater power(God) to put one's faith in. Things are not always as they "seem." Although we can understand the world through our senses, often our senses deceive us. Seale's writing is simple yet profound, sensible, practical and helpful. Highly recommended.
Our subconscious helps to simplify the decision-making process. It uses the “labels” we memorized in the past in the depths of our mind, and talks to us with the voice of the other “SELF”, the so-called “monkey mind”, suggesting an easier way: that of status quo, of decisions already made and habits already acquired. But there is neither change nor growth if we don’t persevere every day outside our comfort zone, step by step, towards the peak of personal growth. Inspiring book!
