These short autobiographical works
are not poems. Oh, the lines are
split into verses as poems are,
but that is what I am
doing with this review.
That does not make it verse.
No, these “poems” are really
prose paragraphs lacking
imagery,
metaphor,
simile,
or anything else that distinguishes
prose from poetry
except for the unjustified lines.
There are a few poems
in which she gives up this pretense.
The lines are laid out on the page as the prose that it is.
How, then, do I review these pieces? As short biographical prose sketches. Hanson tends to write about especially traumatic moments in her early life, and does so movingly. I feel inside her head, in that room, experiencing that emotion. It isn’t poetry, but it is moving and the best bits are beautifully written. I like this book, but feel cheated because I expected a book of poems, and so only three stars.
