Written in 1947, this is a good look at policy in the Near East (now more commonly called the Mid East) The history from 1900 to 1947 is quite revealing and is an important part to the Mid East today. It reveals the failures of the British and French and the emergence of the new nations. Where it fails is in its look to the future. I now understand that in the view of the region the United States has been viewed as having designs in an empire. Our protection of petroleum interests simply confirms that this perception may be correct. I love the references to Walter Lipmann and the failed export of democracy to countries that really have no foundation in a democratic system. Again, Americans tend to superimpose there system on others. Also, Speiser totally misses the upcoming Arab Israeli conflicts. Still, the book served a purpose of providing background material.
